Print as PDF screwing up
« on: November 03, 2008, 06:07:01 PM »
OK all you high level Mac Experts  (This means you tacit and gunug and Mayo) and or whosomeverelse has requisit expertise.

A week ago or so, I purchase a USB to Parallel adapter cable to test hooking an HP LaserJet 5MP up for set up for my wife.

Long story short, when I print using the PDF button > Save as PDF option on lower left corner my system,

my computer machine started creating a bunch of ParsedPPD Files in "Recovered Files" in the trash upon reboot.

See attached picture of the Trash Can contents.

[attachment=1100:Picture_1.jpg]

The individual ParsedPPD files contain a bunch of jibberish along with some recognizable text.

Each of these files is always 44KB long, and too long to put here.

Could any body post one of these on TeeEss so I can include a sample for you experts to look at?

Yes, I've Repaired Permissions, verified disk etc. several times each.

- Thanks, Jack

In your case, these are temporary files created when you display a print dialog with a postscript printer selected (ie: your LaserWriter) - see this somewhat related post: http://www.omnigroup.com/mailman/archive/m...ril/039246.html

(though he has 8 of 'em each time...)

So...not to worry. I currently have 4 Recovered Items folders in my trash - I guess I need to empty the trash more often!! wink.gif

Paddy:

This has only occurred since the 5MP tests. Never used to get these before!

The 5MP print Queues have been eradicated, removed or whatever.

The only current print queues are for my LaserJet 1320 and my Epson Stylus Photo 820.

I do a lot of PDF > Save as printing to form PDF files.

Quite annoying to say the least!

Why?????

And isn't the print services Apple supplied software??

OS X 10.4.11

P.S. Gotta go to bed now. Am very tired what with home problems creating large voids in sleep patterns – only 2-4 hours sleep per night on average.

I've also lost around 15 pounds over last several months. Of course that's not all bad. toothgrin.gif

I'm not sure I see the problem. The files will disappear the next time you empty the trash. I can't remember anyone ever mentioning a useful file, of any type, that was inside a "Recovered items" folder. dntknw.gif

The PPD files are usually created by the manufacturer, I think. They are 'simply' files that describe what the printer can and cannot do, info to put in the Print dialog (special features) and such. All the OS does is read the files and define what you'll see in that dialog. Oh, it may also do a hundred other things, behind our backs, that makes printing, in whatever printer (real or virtual) so easy.

I think you should avoid looking inside the Trash unless you are looking for something specific that you might have put there accidentally. Go play in the street! Stay out of the garbage! tease.gif

If you really want to see where they probably came from, look in the root Library (not your home Library) and scroll down the list until you see a folder called "Printers." I'll bet you have another folder in there called (drum roll, please) "PPDs." Keep drilling down the hierarchy and you should eventually see a bunch of ".gz" files for practically every printer known to man or computer.

You are right about these garbage files having printer setup and stuff like that in them.

Nice talk Jim! I think I'll go out and play in the street.   harhar.gif   whistling.gif Thank goodness there's not much traffic on our street at night, altho it has no street lights and is kind of dark, altho not dark enough to see many stars on clear nights. And especially on cloudy nights.

Besides, inquiring minds want to know! wallbash.gif  mad.gif

Hey Jim, please don't take this personally.

Jack W,

What you didn't say is whether the Print to PDF worked and you got what you wanted - a PDF file in your folder somewhere. If so, then don't worry about what is in the trash. Software developers move and program in mysterious ways and as someone says a lot of programs create tempory files that are trashed at the end of the program's run.

Every once in awhile, dump a small amount of bleach into the Trash Can and hose it out. :-pu-: Then you should be good to go!

MM,

Yes, the files get generated properly so I guess I'll just forget about it.
