Paddy, I discovered that I had 2 versions of VLC in my apps folder and neither were the "most" current, so I downloaded a "fresh" version of VLC, dumped all my old prefs and stuff and ... bingo! I can now hear the local morning news. THANKS!!!!!!!

This is a very good primer on the switch to digital TV if anyone needs it:

Note the admonition to act quickly if you want one of those $40 coupons from the federal government, as there are a limited number (something I hadn't seen elsewhere!)

Once the original batch of coupons are given out there may be additional money which will only be available to people who don't have access to cable or other means of receiving digital. But I wouldn't count on it if you haven't gotten your coupons yet.
Got mine and my folks' a few months ago and converter boxes are in place and ready to go. I switch back and forth sometimes since I find the weather can affect the digital signal. That may be a bummer once the transition takes place. I hope they boost the signals or I may be forced to get cable TV. Ugh. (Just got a flier in the mail that Verizon FIOS is coming to my neighborhood.)
