... so I'll just have to describe it.
Mark's thread on the bird count was in my mind yesterday as I encountered
12 fully grown wild turkeys crossing the road on the way to my folks' house.
Part of my trip goes through a wildlife preserve and the speed limit is 20-25 mph which is very hard to stick to since the road is really not that busy. But since a police car happened to be behind me I dutifully kept under the limit. Good thing too because all of a sudden a large turkey came out up out of the ravine and strutted across the road, followed by another, then another...
Of course I stopped and then looked down the hill toward the stream and could see a long line of them marching through the brush, up the hill and across the road. Fortunately the police car was behind me and the other cars that then backed up behind him didn't dare beep their horns.
It took a couple minutes for all of them to get across and up the other side into the woods. I kept thinking that hunting season was soon approaching and I wondered how many of them would make it through the winter. The most I ever saw before was the family of 9 that crisscrossed my yard a couple years ago. That included Mom, Pop and 7 kids.
