OT - It doesn\'t pay to speak too soon
« on: January 31, 2003, 04:52:00 AM »
Last week I gloated that here in the UK we were having lovely mild spring weather.  Today.... it's different. Bizarrely, Birmingham, 20 miles west, had snow; The M11 motorway mentioned in the story is about 50 miles east. Coventry had only a slight dusting of snow; Nuneaton - just 12 miles north of Coventry - has had none at all. A whole continent of weather in a tiny island. Weird or what!

"10hrs to go 2 miles"....I'll never again complain when it takes me an extra 30 min to get home during a blizzard.

Fear those who do not care; they neither kill nor betray, but betrayal and murder exist because of their silent consent.

I was very fortunate to arrive home to suburbia yesterday before the traffic jams really set-in. It did take me an hour longer on my normal route across London. I started sliding in second gear on the north circular before Hanger Lane.
My wife who works just 5 miles away rang me at 2015 to pick her up. I told her to get a taxi only to find out that there were none available. All the roads around our house were full of ice and jams. I finally went out at midnight and was not able to get more than half-a-mile and it took a good hour to get that far and two hours to get back.
My wife had to stay at work, and finally arrived at home at midday today.
It sickens me that the councils didn't grit the road. Its just typical of their incompetence. We live very near the Central Line (Tube) which is now closed for two weeks following the recent derailment.
Transport in London is crap.
And we are being pushed into this congestion charge by the guy in the glass box www.sod-u-ken.com, it is going to have a knock-on effect across London as traffic  gets pushed into other areas. It is the biggest tax increase ever from a so-called socilaite who couldn't care a damn about you and I.
As a district nurse I will be affected, as will all other public workers. We are expected to pay first, and be re-imbursed later. Another selfish policy done by a politician.
And in the background of the forthcoming war that's just as unpopular.........84% are against the war.

How I love a straight line!

Are you talking about the weather or the country?!

Hey! I'm just kidding! I think parts of England are some of the most beutiful I've seen anywhere in the world, certainly better than what's around our house! But the weather can be 'changable,' shall we say. Not much between you and the cold north Atlantic! Where I live, we have about 1,500 miles between us and the cold north Pacific. Unfortunately, even a 1,000 miles is not enough protection from what Canada sends our way this year! I need to speak to the border guards about that. But I hear they are not too particular about checking everything...

I sympathize with your weather problems. Just when it seems like your getting ahead on the danged utility bills, along comes a weather front to upset thing.

Hit 90° here in the Valley today. Had to turn on the air condiditoner and uncover the pool for the kids.

Life's a b**ch; err beach!
