I can only surmise that either Apple has lost its mind or they'll be coming out with new pro-level, non-glossy, SWOP certified monitors in January when they release the (rumored) new Mac Pros. Let's hope it's the latter.
Granted - the Cinema Displays hadn't been updated in so long that a lot of pro users (photographers in particular) had probably moved on to 3rd party monitors which have improved incredibly and come down significantly in price over the past 4 years.
