Actually, it's NOT your ISP that is doing the watching - it's still the record companies. They just hand the IP numbers over to the ISP who then gets to contact the alleged miscreants.

This method of enforcement is spreading - the UK has been discussing it, Japan and France are also either doing it or considering doing it.

It actually keeps the legal system out of it - there are no new laws needed.

The RIAA in the US has declared that it has reached agreements with several "major ISPs" - but it's not saying which ones, and some of them are saying "not us!"

Also, from what I can tell, this action is targeting uploaders, not downloaders. That in and of itself is actually problematic - because if nobody downloads something you uploaded, then it's a little difficult to argue that there was actually a copyright infringement, since as far as I know, there is no law that says WHERE you have to store your music (assuming that the music in question is music you legally obtained through purchase in the first place).

Thanks Paddy!  I hadn't had the 2nd cuppa yet!  

I don't mind a crack down on illegal filesharing; except for the highway robbery the RIAA is engaged in!  I'm not
going to like having my ISP (AT&T) harass me at the same time they're charging more for less service.  What a
world, what a world.
