George, I'm a bit confused by your terminology. I've never heard of a VDI or a VDU adapter. VGA perhaps?

as ever Paddy you are right at least as far as vdu is concerned it should of course be vga but as to vdi I think if you look at this link www.provantage.com/apple-m9267g~7APLM00R.htm it will show a vdi adapter (but not the one I require)

Further info - you might have difficulty with that display on a PC.

In amongst the many posts in a thread on Windows INF Driver for Apple Cinema Display are a couple to take note of:

QUOTE
Marek said:
Hi,
I have a first generation 22″ Apple Cinema display connected via a DV box to my VAIO RG34 with a Radeon X300.
The problem is I can’t get any higher than 1280x1024. This leaves two unused 2-inch bands on the sides of the screen.
What’s my solution - a new driver, a new video card, or….?
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Methinks you'd be best to get a video card that supports DVI out.

I'm assuming here that you have the first edition 22" - the one that HAS DVI, not the special ADC connector that Apple was using for a while there.

I did find this: http://www.accstation.com/pothxxxxad08.htm...31=pothxxxxad08

Is that what you're looking for? It won't work. See this thread:

Confirming that this monitor is DVI-D (ie: digital ONLY):

So - a new graphics card is the way to go if you want to use the Cinema Display with your PC. The ATI Radeon cards that support 1600X1024 should do it. BTW - you can only adjust the monitor with the software that comes with the graphics card; the controls on the monitor don't work on a PC.

Edit: George, that link to Provantage that you provided is for a DVI to S-Video adapter. I've never heard of them referred to as VDI adapters. They're most often used for connecting a laptop to a projector.

George just emailed me to let me know that the display he has is actually this one:

http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=a...e#ps-tech-specs

It has the ADC connector, so it becomes more difficult to connect it to a PC, since the ADC connector is essentially a DVI connector with power bundled. As far as I know, you cannot connect the ADC monitors to a VGA port - like the DVI-D, they're digital only.

You will need both an ADC to DVI adapter AND a video card with DVI output for the PC. Probably not worth the expense.

The other non-Apple ADC to DVI adapters out there are for connecting non-ADC monitors to ADC-only Macs (the Cube and some G4s had this port as well as a VGA port)

Thinking.gif So...all I need (besides the desk space eek2.gif ) would be this $100 DVI to ADC adaptor/converter/heater! biggrin.gif

Only two things prevent me from offering to buy that display:
1. A large body of water.
2. A small collection of coins.

Paddy, I think the above quote from you says it all, the only alternative would be to offload it on to e-bay but the shipping costs would make it from a buyers  point of view too expensive, nevertheless my thanks to you for your efforts and sound advise.
Jim,
it is sad to hear that you cannot afford the transportation of said item as a result of your straightened circumstances, genteel penury sure is tough, I should know.
