Beware of AT&T Self-Service Tool!!!
« on: February 11, 2009, 02:23:34 PM »
I went to use my MAC last night and my DSL wasn't working.  We had high winds and rain around last night so I figured it might have been that.  I hooked my XP/PC directly to the DSL modem (the DSL setup was originally done on the XP machine) and after resetting a few times I got an internet connection but couldn't go into the DSL modem directly via it's default IP address and the AT&T Self-Service Tool didn't work.  I decided to download a new version from AT&T (the old version was pretty old) and when I installed it I did get into the modem and everything seemed alright but the new SST had overwritten some system areas on the hard drive in an attempt to gain control of the machine before XP loaded.  This effectively zeroed out my boot loader so the system no longer starts!  I think (someone can correct me) that this is the same sort of thing that SONY got into trouble with back a couple years ago.

I can fix it but I "really" chaps my hide!

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF COUNTRIES
Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
And the United States = The Banana system
