Good morning..... smile.gif

Found on a UK forum, but I'm sure many folk here will appreciate it...

Comments Made in the Year 1955

'I'll tell you one thing. . .. if things keep going the way they are, it's going to be impossible to buy a week's groceries for $20.00.'

'Have you seen the new cars coming out next year? It won't be long before $2,000.00 will only buy a used one...'

'If cigarettes keep going up in price, I'm going to quit. A quarter a pack is ridiculous!

'Did you hear the post office is thinking about charging a dime just to mail a letter?'

'If they raise the minimum wage to $1.00, nobody will be able to hire outside help at the store.'

'When I first started driving, who would have thought gas would someday cost 29 cents a gallon. Guess we'd be better off leaving the car in the garage.'

'Kids today are impossible. Those duck-tail haircuts make it impossible to stay groomed. Next thing you know, boys will be wearing their hair as long as the girls.'

'I'm afraid to send my kids to the movies anymore. Ever since they let Clark Gable get by with saying, 'DAMN' in GONE WITH THE WIND, it seems every new movie has either HELL or DAMN in it.'

'I read the other day where some scientist thinks it's possible to put a man on the moon by the end of the century. They even have some fellows they call astronauts preparing for it down in Texas .'

'Did you see where some baseball player just signed a contract for $75,000 a year just to play ball? It wouldn't surprise me if som eday they'll be making more than the President.'

'I never thought I'd see the day all our kitchen appliances would be electric. They are even making electric typewriters now.'

'It's too bad things are so tough nowadays. I see where a few married women are having to work to make ends meet.'

'It won't be long before young couples are going to have to hire someone to watch their kids so they can both work.'

'Marriage doesn't mean a thing any more. Those Hollywood stars seem to be getting divorced at the drop of a hat.'

'I'm afraid the Volkswagen car is going to open the door to a whole lot of foreign business.'

'Thank goodness I won't live to see the day when the Government takes half our income in taxes. I sometimes wonder if we are electing the best people to Congress.'

'The drive-in restaurant is convenient in nice weather, but I seriously doubt they will ever catch on.'

'There is no sense going to Lincoln or Omaha any more for a weekend, it costs nearly $15.00 a night to stay in a hotel.'

'No one can afford to be sick any more. At $35.00 a day in the hospital it's too rich for my blood.'

'If they think I'll pay 50 cents for a hair cut, forget it.'

True, but that was for a 'nice' hotel! You can still find that $15 rate around here, if you're willing to stay only an hour. eek2.gif blush-anim-cl.gif

Strangely, I received a forwarded email yesterday that stated in very clear terms that Snopes was not to be trusted as it had been learned from a deep and exhaustive investigation that the site is run by a married couple! eek2.gif I'm still not sure what the problem is exactly. That they are married or that they admit to running the site or what. I was amazed at how through the 'investigation' must have been! The fact of who runs that site has only become available about 13 years ago! rofl.gif

Apparently, the 'investigation' was conducted by the use of Google, as in "googling the Internet has turned up much information about this site." Uh, right. That's pretty much what Google does... dntknw.gif I suppose the 'investigators' never bothered to determine if all that 'information' might actually be true? But, after all, if it's on the interweb, it must be true. wallbash.gif

Near the end of the 'report' it became clear that the 'investigators' were actually concerned about the political leanings of the couple and some responses they gave about Clinton era actions. Again, I didn't realize that Clinton actions are still 'news' that can affect the reports of urban legends and validity of emails. I've never thought of using Snopes.com to verify any 'political' information or even political statements. That kind of stuff is simply too new to find on Snopes.com. And the opponents seem to do a better job of 'fact-checking' anyway! smile.gif

So, I will continue to send people to Snopes.com and TruthorFiction.com when replying to the usual 'scare-mails' that suggest boiling all milk to remove contaminants or the discovery of various human body parts inside certain dog diseconomies... Otherwise, I take most of these "way-back-machine" pieces for what they are; interesting thoughts about what we think people must have said back then and how we think the future may be. smile.gif and it's interesting and educational to see just what and when things happened in the oh so short time of most of our lives. Wonder what we might learn from 'real' history? eek2.gif
