oh no i'm still freezing
« on: May 09, 2009, 02:46:23 AM »
i had a whole week without one 'freezing' episode. today i have had three all within 30mins. the only application open was the net which i was surfing at the time of the big freeze. the only start up applications left since the last tidy up are itunes and mouse helper. any further suggestions? look what has reappeared on the verify permissions!

I doubt your startup items are causing the trouble unless the original files are on the Macintosh HD which seems to be having trouble.  Hold your mouse cursor over them and wait a couple seconds to see where they are located (a little window will pop up with the path to the application).

Do you have any repair programs like Diskwarrior or any of the TechTool discs?  Most recent Macs came with a Tools CD that had a version of the TechTool program on it for repairs.  If you do let us know and we will guide you in using it on the Macintosh HD.
Also be sure you don't have anything open from that drive when you try to verify or repair it. If you do it won't mount.

There is a possibility that Spotlight was indexing it at the time. Go into System prefs/Spotlight/Privacy.  You can drag the Mac HD icon into that window and it will stop Spotlight from indexing it. Then try the repair/verify again.

At least your boot volume seems to be OK. Try emptying the cache for your browser. Sometimes that will clear things up.

I had an iGloo that was locking up at work and it turned out to be the new memory we had put in; it had passed the tests but changing it out with another from the same vendor fixed it!
