I'm guessing here:
Not only did Apple donate the iPods, but they also paid Oprah big bucks to do this.
She is, after all, one of America's richest women.

I don't think they did. From what I have heard, Oprah is a big iPod fan. I don't watch Oprah but at the front page of MacMinute they said:
Apple's 15GB iPod has made its way into O Magazine  as one of Oprah's "Favorite Things." Several readers also note that Oprah gave away a new third generation iPod to each person in the audience of her television show yesterday.

And a check of that O magazine site just shows it on her favorites list.

As one of the richest woman in the U.S., she could easily afford to give out free iPods to her audience.

I doubt very much they could pay her to do this.

She doesn't need the money.

it's just something she likes.

She has made Best Sellers by mentioning them on her show.

This is certainly worth Millions to Apple.

As to whether Apple donated or not, I don't know.

It's small change to either party.

Actually Oprah asks the companies to donate their items and if they say no, then they don't get featured. She commented that she is wealthy cause she is also cheap.

Actually, Oprah does buy the products and give them out to the guest on her show.  Why?  It's taxing time, and she needs to do something with the cash.

A year ago she spent over a million of her cash to give away stuff to the guest on her show.

She's cool, smart and it makes her feel good to share the wealth since she did come from a poor home/family.
