Web Bug from ....
« on: July 16, 2009, 10:51:19 PM »
What the heck? Recently I wrote to one of my elected representatives (okay, so I wrote to all of them ... and I don't intend to stop ... but) ... today one of them actually replied to my note.  ohmy.gif  Since I'd used my gmail addy, the reply was downloaded into Thunderbird. TB is set to block all images, so I knew there was an image, but not what it was. I forwarded the reply to Sneakers and also to my private email addy. My private email is downloaded via Eudora. Eudora sent the note to my spam folder, and adjusted the subject so that is reads:

CODE
Subject: {Disarmed} [Fwd: In response to your email about ...]

I couldn't figure out why Eudora flagged it as junk, and I moved the email to my inbox and opened it to read and prepare a reply. At the bottom of the note, Eudora had placed a broken graphic icon and next to that it read:

CODE
Web Bug from http://www.mailscanner.tv/1x1spacer.gif

Now, if I understand this correctly this is a tracker so that my representative knows if I've read the note? And if I open it from another addy it would tell him/her that? Does this transmit other info? How dangerous is this? And why did Eudora have to "disarm" it? Also what exactly is "mailscanner.tv"?

Oh yeah, and why does it matter to my so-called representative when, or if, I've read his/her reply to me? D*** big brother! wink.gif

Kimmer, your ISP is using Mailscanner, methinks.

And yes, it does look like your elected representative is tracking email replies - for what reason, I haven't the foggiest.

Thanks, Paddy. It's not our ISP, because it came through without being cleaned on Sneakers machine (he uses TB), so I'm wondering if it is Eudora? I gather mailscanner is a good thing.

I just did a search on my computer for 'mailscanner' and got hundreds of hits! Every stinkin' html email has one of these little bugs in it. Glad I have html turned off.  dry.gif They're all a bunch of rats! tongue.gif

It must be you Kimmer, I just did a search on my computer and there was nothing found (and I have it set to receive mail in html format).
So, not sure what you did... or maybe they are just tired of you mailing every single representative that they joined forces and are now tracking you down...

That's just an option of course, nothing to panic about... noevil.gif

The 'tracking' is done by logging the IP address of the machine/server that sent the request for the image. The initial request will be your email program, if it is set to display images/html. The image, itself, is probably a simple but transparent gif (1 x 1 pixel is as small as possible) that will never be seen by the naked (or even clothed) eye. The 'logging' simply confirms that your addy was real and that you actually opened the message. SPAMmers appreciate the cooperation provide by opening a message with html enabled. That way, they can add your addy to their ever growing list of 'valuable' addresses that can be sold or used for further 'correspondence' to you. Of course, many politicians are busy a lot of the time. Seeing all those lobbyists takes a lot of time! eek2.gif So, they don't want to waste time with bots or 'people' who don't read their (often canned) responses. I'm sure your representative is concerned only with your well being and simply wants to serve you better, donations accepted with graciousness, of course...

This is exactly what tacit described (and has repeated) many years ago in describing the misuse of html in emails. The logging of people opening them via tiny, transparent (invisible) images. But most seem not to care and leave html enabled all the time. I'm too paranoid for that and stuff still gets by SpamSieve occasionally! It is usually obvious when a message has an image that the sender feels is absolutely imperative to the future of mankind. When that happens, I simply verify who sent the message and then decide whether or not to view the image(s).

In this case, the politician may be completely unaware that this image was even inserted in his correspondence. It may just be a 'service' that is provided by the ISP/Emailing Service he uses for the statistical benefits it provides. dntknw.gif I doubt that asking him/her about it will shed any light on the matter. Most representatives have a hard enough time understanding the legislation before them, much less the intricacies of the interweb! eek2.gif laughhard.gif I dare say that you are much more aware and have a greater understanding of the interweb than the representative has about the subject of your messages to him/her. rolleyes.gif wallbash.gif

I think I'm more aware and have a greater understanding of many things than my representative -- especially as they concern the 'little guy'.  dry.gif

GrammarBear here. police.gif

Since there are Masculine and Feminine forms of the English word "blond/blonde" [one of a very few BTW, although many other languages have lots and lots], and the person in question in this instance [I'll bet you didn't realize that you were "questionable" Kim biggrin.gif] is of the Feminine persuasion, IMO the feminine spelling should be used.

Afterthought:  Playing Devil's Advocate, I could argue that while people are either Masculine or Feminine, hairs are not, and should be treated as non-gendered/masculine.

QuestionableGrammarSpellingPunctuationChallengedKim here. tongue.gif

I've only become a blond in my wiser years, having spent the majority of my life as a brunette, so I admit to not being up on the blond/blonde challenge. When I typed blonde', FF corrected it to blond. After reading your thoughtful correction of my QuestionableGrammaticalMis-spelling, I headed to my dictionary -- the Dictionary/Thesaurus installed by the Apple OS. Below is what I found. Please note the items I circled with blond paint, and the statements underlined in candy apple red.  whistling.gif

Since I'm an American through and through, I think I'll stick with the American version. wink.gif
