Well, having wrestled with Apple Mail for around two hours yesterday trying to do something that took me five minutes with Eudora reaffirms to me why I stick with Eudora...

I really hope that MailForge is successful because it would be great to have a modern version of Eudora available. But I think that it is a testament to Eudora's developers that a program that hasn't been officially supported for years still works fine with Leopard.

The only reason that I am messing around with Mail at all is because it appears to be the only viable option when it comes to the iPhone. But it's easily the crappiest email client I have ever used...

I thought the requirement to use the View->Best Alternative was created by the desire to not display html messages. That's the way I've always had Mail set, since I first started using it. How else does one prevent the image tags from being parsed and used?

Unfortunately, Mail seems to allow html to be turned off only for 'remote' images. Those would be images not enclosed by the message, of course, and the ones that would require the 'image' tags (which is the problem).

So, how can one turn all html/rtf OFF in Mail?

In MAIL GoTo > Menu > Attachments --- check the option to "Always send Windows-Friendly attachments"

That's a good technique, but a little useless when both computers are Macs. And the problem was not in the sending, but in the receiving. <The solution>, however, was very simple, indeed.

I take it you've never experienced the "joys" {HA!} of using Outlook or Outlook Distress?

Now that I say that, I remember One Outlook Feature that I've missed in Every Other e-client I've used over the years: I'm not sure whether the Mac version had this or not, but on the PeeSee, Outlook permitted one to RENAME saved email msgs, to make it easier for me to find stored msgs whose titles did not accurately reflect their content/significance IMO.

And truth be told, each client did some things right from my point-of-view.

Not to let a mystery go unsolved, I pondered the cause, then went to bed.

Upon awakening I was thinking about some of the weird dreams I had just had when... into my head popped the answer.

A week or so ago I was advising someone on the use of Onyx. While going through all the parameters that could be changed in the miscellaneous section I think I ticked off the line that says "Display TEXT mails instead of HTML when available", thinking this was generally a good practice anyway. Little did I realize what it would do to incoming attachments.

I opened Onyx and found the box unticked (probably resultant from my manual editing on the Mail pref---interesting how that would work in reverse, changing the settings in Onyx) so decided to retick it and see what happened. YUP, the emails reverted to not being able to see the attachments. Removing the check put Mail back to default state and visible attachments.

So beware of what you do with those utility apps. Results can be surprising.

I really didn't expect this thread to become quite so interesting. Helpful, sure, but not the gripping chronicle of Coping with Modern Life – as iy has.

Eudora also allows the user to rename email messages; I take advantage of that feature on a regular basis. Why isn't it an option with all email clients?

My primary problem with Mail is how difficult it is to configure it without resorting to the setup "wizard." And it has a bug where passwords stored in the Keychain are not changed when they are altered in Mail. It often requires the user to use Keychain Access to delete the old Mail passwords in order for the new passwords to take effect.

It never ceases to amaze me the inconvenience and lack of features that many people will accept in order to use a "free" software program like Mail.

Had I experienced those problems, I doubt that either I or my wife would have switched to Mail. However, the reason we switched is because Eudora was giving her problems that seemed impossible to fix. Obviously, one's milage differs... However, I certainly agree with your amazement, except I would include any application, free or not.
