Colorado River thru the Grand Canyon
« on: July 23, 2009, 02:02:57 PM »
My husband and daughter just returned from a wonderful trip down the Colorado thru the Grand Canyon on a rafting trip.
They went on the paddle rafts on the 2 week trip, and got some amazing pictures, here is one that our daughter took,
Everybody who went are uploading their pictures to Picasa sites to share.
I should pick some and upload them to my site, just a few, as theyve posted over 500 so far.

Back when I took the trip, there was no such thing as a digital camera, that was 21 years ago.  And all we had were the tiny point and shoots that we stuck inside our life jackets, not many good pix back then.
Jane

WHoops, this one is awfully big, but it shows the detail.

The people on the trip who had waterproof cameras have been uploading their videos!  WOW, is the correct word, they are amazing.
I sort of wished I had gone, but somebody had to stay home with Lilly,,,,,,,

My first and only "Whitewater Rafting" trip was on the Northern Branch of the Snake River in Idaho. Both of my sons were in Boy Scouts and we had just arrived at Mountain Home AFB, Idaho. We looked up the Scoutmaster and he said your just in time for our White water rafting trip this weekend. We went and had a blast. It is exhilerating and dangerous. One of our guides who was quite experienced, fell overboard on one particularly fast and deep rapid. We recovered him, but he was visibly shaken up.

All in all we had a wonderful experience!

Yes, it can be dangerous.
When I went 20 years ago, one raft capsized in Lava Falls, and the only guy who couldnt hang on, was stripped of every single piece of clothing he had on plus his life jacket.
I managed to grab one of his sandles and one of the guides on our raft handed the oars to my husband, and grabbed the guy by his leg and hauled the guy aboard our raft.
The guy was quite shaken to say the least.
But its totally worth it, more dangerous to drive anywhere in a car.

Where's the photos Jane, did I miss them? I've lost 2 cameras and countless photos in whitewater through the years. smile.gif

A friend, who now lives in Kentucky used to be a guide on the Colorado, we've floated frequently. wink.gif

Dolphin, the Snake through 7 Devils is one of most spectacular river runs on the planet. Most don't know about Hell's Canyon, or that its deeper than the Grand or that the water faster. Some of that water on the Salmon is real hairy too, the middle fork through the Sawtooth wow. wink.gif

Ah, whitewater rafting... been three times in the Lehigh Valley. They have reservoir releases twice a year which guarantee at least category 3 rapids.

But the most interesting experience was riding motorcycle-style on the back of one of the guides' kayaks.  At one point in calm water he told me to take a deep breath and hold on tight. He then proceeded to do a barrel roll which was quite a surprise. The people in the nearby rafts all applauded but I felt like a drowned rat.  rolleyes.gif

Here are 3 more pictures that our daughter took, I would have to get permission from the others, who took more pictures and videos with bigger and better cameras, to post them later.
The first one is of a typical non-rapid stretch,
The second is from the Deer Creek trail, amazing views, and looking down upon their group.
The third is when they come ashore so the guides can scout the rapids for the safest route, as with water level fluctuations, things change dramatically.
They call them 'tides'.

My husband's youngest sister did the Snake river and said it was just amazingly beautiful.

Yesterday right here on Cape Cod, we took the grandkids tubing on a tidal estuary, what a blast.  Water temp above 75, a far cry from the Colorado.
The dog swam all afternoon and is totally exhausted today, we could touch the river bottom sand, but she couldnt.  But we did get her out onto the sandbars and the marsh to rest. Yellow Labs are such amazing swimmers.

Whole family wants to go back next year, who wants to take care of Lilly, the Yellow Lab from Exuberance planet?
Jane

No, seriously, we do plan another trip there, when the grandkids will be old enough to deal.

Great pix - that first one benefits from having people in it to provide scale! Thanks for posting smile.gif
