Wake from sleep problem
« on: September 10, 2009, 01:24:39 AM »
Over the last several days, my iMac has developed issues on wakeup.  When I wake it up in the morning, I get a spinning cursor.  Occasionally, I need to turn the computer off, and back on.  I can not restart it from the menu.  In addition, occasionally I have a problem with a program while I am using the computer, sometimes Photoshop, sometimes Mail or Safari.  Again, the spinning cursor, and when I attempt to force quit, the item turns red, has the word Rosetta in parentheses next to it, and does NOT quit. Again, I can not restart, or log out, but have to turn off the computer.

I have repaired permissions, I have run Disk Warrior, and still have the problem.  I have not installed any new software, or changed anything which I am aware of. Does anyone have an answer?  Thanks in advance. wallbash.gif

Did the Mac wake up previously without the beachball? It is not unusual to have the spinning ball for up to 30 seconds since some hard drives take that long to wake up.

Do you have any externals attached? Try removing them and see if you have the same problem.

Startup from your install disc or external OS and run Repair Disk in Disk Utility.

Check your Console logs to see if there is any info on what is causing this situation.

If you get a frozen app again that won't quit via force quit window, open Activity Monitor, click on the app in question and hit the red Quit Process button at top. That might work and prevent having to shut down.

Some other things to try regarding the wake from sleep issue: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?...9628124#9628124

Do you have any apps that are actually using Rosetta? (ie: old version of Photoshop etc.)

Do a Get Info on all the applications that are hanging and make sure that "Open using Rosetta" is UNCHECKED. The only thing that might require it is an older version of Photoshop - CS2 or older.
