In that case, items 1 through 8 seem to be fairly accurate, I'd read about all of them in other places, nothing new that I could see. Since this is Gizmodo, I guess the 'comments' come with the territory.

The last two are purely editorial comments without any real substance. Again, consider the source.

Something weird has cropped up on my DT.
A file labeled: DS_Store & one global icon labeled Network.
Neither of which can be trashed. Anybody know what's happening?

DS_Store is a file that keeps preferences regarding how a folder looks, size, placement, background, etc. The file is harmless and normally can be trashed.

Are you networked with another Mac? It may be that the file you see is related to the other Mac on your network. When you connect to another Mac it will dump that file on the other Mac desktop and vice versa.

The Network icon and DS files usually will only be seen if you have some how checked "show invisible files" in some application like TinkerTool.

I was tinkering but not w/ TinkerTool.
But how do I undo my tinkering? Both these items will not trash.
Can I force trash & how?

Have you tried the suggestions in the Help file?
command-shift-option-delete
There's also the Secure Empty Trash item in the Finder menu.

I have found that .DS_Store files to be the most problematic files created by the OS. Probably because they are written and read so often. I use PathFinder in "show invisible" mode and that's the easiest way to delete them. That way, Finder is not cluttered with all those other "." named files.

And PF is only a command-tab away since it is always running.
