With the result of kernel panic - it still works but after a while it stops, and the picture fades away.

I have managed to back up to external hard disk.

I run disk utility and repaired the preferences - it said that the SUID could not be repaired.

They said hard disk is okay.

So maybe something was damaged inside - the laptop is insured all risks.

I would be grateful for your comments please.

You can safely ignore the permissions message:

The video gradually fading away is more of a concern and given the circumstances, is more likely a connection that is now dodgy as a result of the fall than anything you can fix via software. Is there any visible external damage? How did it land? Was it closed or was it open? The connection between the screen and the base could have been damaged if it was open, which could result in the video issues you're seeing.

I'd suggest taking it in to an authorized Apple repair depot and asking them to figure out what is the matter and if it can be fixed.

That must have been one sickening moment... sad.gif Hope it's something that can be fixed easily and that your insurance will cover it.

Paddy is probably right. In the meantime, you could remove RAM modules and reseat them in case one of them came loose. Considering that video seems to be the issue, I don't hold out much hope for this but it's a quick thing to try.

It was closed. After a number of tries the apple came on and the log-in, at the first attempt the mouse got stuck. The 2nd and 3rd attempts no picture, and then gradually I got everything back - but then there was a sound of music repeating. I checked the hard disk in disc utility and it said nothing wrong. Then I repaired permissions in preferences. However after a while it told me to turn off and restart, and I could only get the picture after a few attempts.  

There was a slight scratch on the cover, but after cleaning it's not there anymore.

Perhaps I have been lucky, as I am using it this morning.

I just wondered what the error reported in my first post meant, but only a techie would know.

When a laptop drops is kernel panic the equivalent of shock?

It is now working almost ok, but if I tilt the laptop - it tells me that I have to press the button to turn off.

Would this mean a little problem or a bigger one? An insurance job or a tweak?

There's probably no way to tell, until you have a tech inspect it. And even then, they could easily miss an intermittent problem. Sounds to me like a broken trace, rubbing parts/wires/broken connectors. Definitely a hardware problem. Software is not damaged by physical damage. Hardware is rarely damaged by virtual damage. wink.gif

Take it to a reputable tech who can run it as long as it takes to malfunction (hours, days, startup, shutdown, restart, etc.). If you wait long enough, it will probably die and take most of your data with it. eek2.gif

If you're insured for breakage in addition to having Applecare then by all means go ahead an run it by Apple.  They can get to the bottom of it the quickest; and the piece of mind will probably be worth the time.  There are things I would check if it were out of warranty and uninsured but there is no reason for you to mess with it.

I don't have apple care, but I have all risks on my home insurance, and sad to say that they replaced the laptop twice already a few years ago.

I did back up my data, and i will have to send it in for inspection - I hope this time though they can fix it.

Larry, before you cart it off to Apple for diagnosis, do check to see if the RAM is seated properly - take it out and put it back in. Kernel panics are often caused by RAM problems, and the fact that things go wonky when you tilt the MBP indicates something is loose/not consistently making electrical contact. If you're lucky, it may just be one of the RAM modules.
