USB turntables - anyone got one...
« on: November 10, 2009, 11:39:33 AM »
...or know someone who has one?

My trusty old Technics stereo is at the other end of the house from the iMac and the amp is wired up with the rest of the kit in a cabinet; I'd like to digitise some of our vinyl treasures (or rubbish, depending whose music we're playing smile.gif ) but the thought of lugging the computer into the other room and wrestling with the wiring has been putting me off.

And I keep getting asked what I want for my birthday, which was over two months ago!  rolleyes.gif

I think Kris has one. I noticed them at Costco a few days ago (!) $88 CDN. I don't have any vinyl anymore though - sold it all to a collector around 1994 or so. This, after lugging 1300 albums, many of them Japanese and German pressings, some of them rare, almost all of them mint, all the way from Toronto to Oregon when we moved. rolleyes.gif Only a couple of regrets though - never have been able to find the Katrina & the Waves Bible of Bop on CD, nor a few of the rarer things I had.

Yup, I bought one nearly two years ago after getting tired of lugging the stereo in from the living room and going through all the wiring to the preamp, etc.

I got this one:

Works fine for digitizing vinyl but wouldn't recommend it as a player since the speaker system is weak. I use Audacity software (free) to clean up any scratch noise or boot amplification if needed. Audacity has tons of features to correct recordings. A couple songs were from a warped platter and I was able to make them bearable by changing their speed via software. At least they don't make you wince too much. smile.gif

Thanks Kris - we have several dealers over here who sell the brand, so I'll check them out. Costco has a warehouse near where Caroline works, but they don't put their prices online, whereas the others do!

Now I'm just waiting to be asked again. Might persuade "someone" to provide a combined birthday and Christmas present. Then I just have to find out what she wants.....  rolleyes.gif  smile.gif
