The rumored Apple Tablet is rumored to be delayed!
« on: November 19, 2009, 02:50:01 PM »
Apparently, according to this rumor-monger, the Apple Tablet release will be delayed a little bit due to the displays they want to use:

QUOTE
Taiwan’s DigiTimes is reporting today that Apple has decided to postpone the launch of its pending tablet product until the second half of 2010.  The main reason for the supposed delay is switch in the displays being used: Apple, the report says, wants to use a 9.7-inch Organic Liquid Crystal Display (OLED) on the device, that costs about $500 from the manufacturer, said to be South Korea’s LG Electronics. A display at that cost would push the tablet’s final price into the $1,500 to $1,700 range, too high for most consumers.

The report goes on to suggest that Apple is planning two tablet models, one with a 9.7-inch display, another with a 10.6-inch display.

Since costs on the display are coming down fast, waiting until the second half of the year will help Apple sell the tablet at lower price, in the $1,200 to $1,500 range, the report says.

Does sound "awful" pricey for something I wouldn't want anyway!

Depends on how "crippled" Apple makes its version of these things. I find even the cheaper PC ones to be too expensive for what they are do. And I suspect that many purchasers are finding that they still don't get what they pay for. But, when price is your only criteria, you are lucky to even get what you pay for, at least for a reasonable length of time... dntknw.gif

The sources estimate that Apple's tablet PC cost will drop to around US$1,200-1,500 by the second half of 2010 with the retail price reaching about US$2,000. The price could be more flexible if bundled with telecom providers' 3G services. Meanwhile, the 10.6-inch LCD panel-based Apple tablet PC is expected to priced in the US$800-1,000 range.

If they are planning something in the $2,000 range they are making a big mistake. The Axiom Modbook would be a whole lot cheaper.

Then again if they tie these things to data plans with telecoms, that will subsidize a lot of the cost.

...subsidize a lot of the cost.
Assuming it is not tied to a particular company! wallbash.gif Personally, a ~9 inch 'tablet' is just an iPhone/Touch that is twice as large. And that should be nowhere near $2,000, assuming the screen costs become 'normal.' My ignorance always suggested that the high cost of large monitors/TV screens was that fact that they had to have 99.9999% (maybe more!) of all pixels working. That percentage, converted to real numbers is considerably smaller with nine inch screens and, theoretically, at least, easier to achieve. Of course, my math and 'reasoning' may be faulty. And the economies of production may be an even bigger function of cost. dntknw.gif smile.gif I'm really agreeing with Kriss that a price much above $500 (My figure, maybe lower) might be a very hard sell. eek2.gif I'm certainly not in the market for even that price point, depending on its capabilities, of course.
