But, as I understand it, the "bow"
is the 'front' of the boat. If you start layering the sheets from that point aft (toward the stern?) each new layer will have its exposed edge on top of the previous one, that is, toward the bow, front, the direction the water is coming from, the direction the boat normally moves. This is not where you want the edges of the layers. Rather, one should start at the stern and work forward. making the overlap at the ending edge of the new layer. just like you place the first rom of shingles on the lower edge of the roof and work upward. This places the exposed edges pointing away from the direction of the water flow.
Now, that said, one can normally put either show on first. Actually, either pants leg can be first, also. Maybe applies to sleeves...but none of those relate to roofs.
