more useless info from Jane (car, not computer)
« on: March 04, 2010, 10:03:59 AM »
Yesterday I set out for the grocery, and found my GMC Suburban was stuck in 4WD LoRange. Bad to drive it on bare pavement, so turned right around and came home.

Searched the net for the repair info, found that it could be a switch or a solenoid. Then called our local garage to make an appointment, and here is what Dave(the service manager) said to do. And it was so easy!  I started the truck, shifted into neutral, pushed the 4wd hi range button, waited 30 seconds, then pushed the 2wd button. Right back to 2wd.
He explained that these trucks will occasionally shift into 4wd LoRange by themselves, dont ask why, but they do. But it will not happen while you are on the highway, as you HAVE to be in neutral to shift either out or into LoRange.

That's a new one on me Jane, I've had 3 suburbans...well the first one was called a Carry-all and I've never had that happen. Is it a 1500/C10 or 2500/C20?

Gee, Im not sure, but its got the big engine.
Our F-150 has a manual 4-wd system.
The GMC Suburban is the push the button kind.

Great vehicles!  I will hate the day that we have to replace them.
Though I think we will keep the F-150 and take it to Maine and leave it there on our son-in-law's farm, it can be in the barn for the winter.
Our old 1979 F-150 is up there now, a guy in the town who owns a garage, wanted it to restore and make a 'classic' out of it, so we gave it to him.
The engine is OK, the brakes and all the body work will be done this summer.
I will make a 'before and after' page for it when its done.
