Unlocked his iPhone
« on: March 28, 2010, 02:41:58 PM »
This morning we gave away 2 small bikes to a person with 2 little boys, and while he was here, he showed me how to unlock an iPhone. I dont even have one yet, but he was explaining how easy it was. He said to Google it and find instructions. He uses the T-Mobile carrier, uses their sim card, and gets everything the old AT+T carrier has, including the data plan, for $60 a month.
He also said he had to 'jailbreak' his iPhone too.

I have no interest in this, but I thought I would pass the info along,
Jane

Saw quite an animated discussion about this, iPhone and AT+T
http://db.tidbits.com/article/11125
On the Fast Money show on CNBC last night.
They are always raving about APPL and their rapidly rising stock,
wish they would do a big split, as I sure would buy more.

Jane,
There was a time where TS would have closed this thread because the activity is illegal. I would not have been one to do so. I suspect if more people unlock their iPhones reality will shine in. An iPhone on at&t around here get 1 BAR reception, on T-Mobile they get 4Bars. One downside of a TMO iphone is the 3G doesn't work. But I've heard remedies are on the way. TMO uses a different frequency for 3G. I iStore is not available either but there are ways around it.

We would both have iPhone here if apple would work with other providers and I know others that feel the same way.

Verizon is the strongest market in these parts and apple would increase there sales.
Apple should just sell iPhones that work with any network provider. IMO There is no physical reason that they couldn't.

Rumors are startin to run rampant again that Apple is getting ready to add Verizon as a provider of iPhones:

and:

Wait, there's more:

AND, if you order in the next 25 seconds . . . . . . . .

- Jack

ps - I couldn't care since I don't own an iPhone, nor do I intend to go out and get one'

ps - I do care, because I do own Apple and Verizon stock, both of which went up after the rumors re-fired.

Thats what our kids say, why doesn't Apple do this, and then people could choose which provider they want.
They would pick the one that works best in their area.
AT+T is fine here, but in Vermont, places in NH and Maine its one bar or worse.
So if you could pop in a new sim card or whatever you need to do, then you could have good coverage.
I don't know how they would manage to bill people, but Im sure they could figure that out.

Actually I dont have an iPhone, as Ive no need for one yet.

The guy on the fast money show said that this Verizon deal would sell many more iPhones and push APPL even higher. Thats going to happen anyway.

QUOTE(sandbox @ Mar 30 2010, 07:37 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
There was a time where TS would have closed this thread because the activity is illegal.

Having given this some thought ... I'm going to do just that until the mods/admins can discuss and decide. I've also removed the original post with the disputable information -- although I have saved it in case the decision is made to allow this information to be shared here.

Jane, Jack and all ... if you wish to discuss the possibility of Apple adding Verizon (yippee!) and such ... feel free to start another thread on that topic.

Thanks,
Kimmer

This thread has now been reopened.

While the practice of unlocking and jailbreaking is considered legal for now, the administration of TS does not recommend nor advocate either. There are many consequences to performing these procedures, one of which is the potential to "brick" your phone if the firmware is updated in the future.

Originally Apple may have had to make a deal to break into the cellphone game, but that contract is long gone. Today they can freely move into an open market, just like Nokia, for example. Apple could also build a data services like my Blackberry has ...and to me, that would be the best route. You could buy an iPhone and an apple email/web service contract through any provider. I can also shift my sim card to my samsung without a hastle, giving me the flexibility I want in a cellphone.

Obviously Apple had to make a deal with some carrier to get the iPhone out of the factory. They chose AT&T for whatever reason. But, non matter who it was, they would probably have had to go with an exclusive deal. Period. I have no idea how long that original contract runs, nor is it particularly relevant, in my opinion. It will run out and the rumors are very strong that it may already have. At least some are reporting that Apple is making a version that runs on Verizon's network. The fact is that, unlike Europe (and most of the rest of the World) there is no "standard" network in the USoA. So, to get all the capabilities of some smart phones, they must come in different versions or multiple network chips. I'm not holding my breath waiting for any "standard" to come along before my great grandchildren retire! rolleyes.gif

Another reason people wanted to 'hack' they iPhone was to get around the limitations Apple has in its hardware and OS. Of course, many of those restrictions are to help maintain stability of the phone. I want my cell phone to work as a cell phone, always. Anything else is secondary. If all I want is a 'brick,' I have of left overs in the back yard. rofl.gif Of course, there are also those who chafe at the insistence of Apple that apps must come from the App Store. Frankly, I wish their controls were a little tighter! wink.gif But that's just me. I have other things to do besides worrying about not being able to get a porn app from Apple... tease.gif

I see no real problem with 'hacking' any product that you own. Software attempts to claim that you are only 'using' it and don't really own it. That's for the courts to decide. But I absolutely, positively think selling anything as your own that is actually created by someone else is plain, old-fashioned, blatant thievery. That said, I'm not aware of anyone trying to sell a jail-broken iPhone, although there may be some. In any event, the warranty is void and I think any attempt to try to make any manufacturer of a product repair it, under a warranty, is also thievery. It is probably easily argued that jail-breaking is legal, but being legal is not the same as being required to service something that has been abused. To me, it's simple contract law: You do this and I'll do that. If either of us fail to uphold our duties, the contract is, at best, null and void, at worst, damages may be required. Next!

Finally, jail-breaking has been around well before the iPhone, it's nothing new. It's not even limited to electronics. Sometimes, it's even been used by incarcerated people!!! eek2.gif

Egads,  you are all way beyond my capability to understand this whole iPhone conundrum at this point, so I will just watch and not contribute. But its sure interesting when you have friends who have done what this guy did.
