Help Needed Installing Flash Player: How and Where
« on: July 30, 2003, 09:38:36 PM »
Evening All,

Can anyone tell me if Flash Player is a one time deal?  I mean, I installed it this afternoon, but it is not showing up anywhere.  The install is in my computer waiting to be installed again!

Cox HSI which is what I have up and running (finally) only supports Outlook Express for email and in turn Internet Explorer is used.

Where am I supposed to install the darn thing and where am I supposed to put it so that when I get links from my friends who use ".swf " Internet Explorer can use my Flash Player?

I know I did the install once already.

I have a Mac OS 8.6.

Warning: Doing this by memory.

You should have an internet folder as soon as you open your hard drive folder.
From there Internet Explorer folder > Plugins folder.
See if it is already in there.

The path might be a little off but that's the general idea.

biggrin.gif Evening Bill,

I will try to see what I can find under Internet Plug-ins.

Before I leave, do you know if this have to be enabled every time I want to read some mail that has "swf"?

Is this some kind of extension that has to be enabled?  How many places would I have to put this thing?

I have lots of questions- don't I?

MrsLop:

The flash player under 8.6 needs to be installed in your browser plugin folder just once (not including an update in the future).  However, if you use more than one browser, then to see the swf in those other browsers, the player needs to be installed in each browser individually. If you put an alias of the player on your desktop, then you can just drag the swf and drop it on the alias and the file wil open in the player without even using a browser.

Help Needed Installing Flash Player: How and Where

wallbash.gif  Evening,

I have had a very hard time with this Application.  It just isn't decent to have to restart my computer as many times as I have in the last 24 hours.

I didn't turn off my Extensions so when I tried to do the install it caused me to lose IE, OE, Cox,Net and Cox Support.  Not to mention the old "PPC Library" error, that has consistently reared its ugly head.

I spent half the night trying to find out which things I put into the Trash after MrsLop "the neatnik", cleaned off the DeskTop.

I found the appropriate flash player did the correct full installation, restarted the computer the player is right where it should be.  Now IE through Outlook Express is saying that IE doesn't know how to handle the types of files you have selected.  You may save the file to your hard disk or configure a Helper Application.

Looking on the bright side, My Desk Top has all the "functionality" that it should :  IE and OE and everything is working, even the Printer!  I even rebuilt the Desk Top after the installation.

I don't have a clue as to what I could have done wrong.
Tomorrow is another day and another opportunity for an "Adventure" in Macland.

Thanks for the help and God Bless,
MrsLop

doh.gif Evening All,

Well, I just couldn't wait until tomorrow for another "Adventure in flash Player."

I just thought I had better check the Memory, as I had to Restart the Mac so many times today.  I remembered that one of the error messages I got was that IE did not have enough Cache.

Sure enough, when I went into the Memory Control Panel, I just allocated more memory and turned on Virtual Memeory.  I then went into the OE to open that "swf" email and it worked just great.

So, again,  thanx.gif  to all who helped.
