Xfer OS 9.2.2 to new partition?
« on: June 13, 2003, 06:18:56 PM »
I need to have my OS 9.2.2 moved to a new partition on a new hard drive. I use this version For Classic . Can I copy the current OS 9.2.2 to a new volume and  point Classic to this new copy. Will this work? Will it be bootable?

If not where can I find a copy of OS 9.2.2 that I can down;oad and then burn a bbotable CD. The latter I would then install into the new partition.

Tom. Basically. Yes. smile.gif

Was this an OS 9.x that was pre-installed or from Software Restore or such?

Whatever.

Can you Boot into OS 9.x on that machine.

That would be best I think.

Just copy OS 9.x to the other Drive/Partition.

Some complication from copying Boot Drive but not much. smile.gif

Then re-select it in System Preferences > Classic.

It should work fine but one thing you should probably do is to make sure you're booted from something other than the OS 9 volume you plan on copying over to the new partition. It's generally not a great idea to copy an active System Folder, at least not an OS 9 System Folder (although it will usually work this method is frowned on by Apple).

Super thanks kelly and jdeer  for your help.

I tried just copying the old OS 9.2.2 volume into a clean volume on a different hard drive (external FireWire) while in OS 10.2.4. However the copy did not work. First I got a message that some items could not be copied did I want to continue? I said yes but then I got a second message stating there was an error and the procedure was halted.

My best gues as to how to handle this is to boot into OS 9.2.2 and then use my Diskwarrior 2.1 CD to reboot into OS 9.2 and then copy the old OS 9.2.2 into the FireWire volume. Note that the FireWire drive was formatted in OS 10.2.4 using Disk Utility. Or, I could just copy the active, old OS 9.2.2 volume into the FireWire partition but that violates jdeer's warning.

Think either solution will work?

Can you reboot directly to the DW CD? Don't know why you would have to go to the 9.2 partition first. I've copied partitions with system folders from my 9600 drive to my external firewire drive with no problem. But I did it while booted into a different partition, so that's my experience and recommendation.  wink.gif
