I upgraded to Safari 5 a few minutes ago. I will add to this later but let me give my first impressions:

Reader is a very welcome addition to Safari. When Safari detects an article, a Reader icon appears in the address bar and, if you click it, you get the article superimposed over the page that you had been in. The article has no extraneous material. If you hover the mouse over the bottom of the article, there are options to zoom in, zoom out, email the article, print the article and close out of it (returning to the original article's page, which can also be done by clicking outside the area of the Reader). Alternatively, you can get into Reader via the View menu or by pressing ⇧-⌘-R.

Reader seems to be a very desirable addition. Also, the Search field now includes Bing as well as Google and Yahoo. I have experimented only briefly with Bing but it seems to work well.

Naturally, Saft doesn't yet work with Safari 5 and I expect that Hao Li will issue an update in the very near future, as is his practice.

Oh yes, one feature seems to be broken. I had set previous versions of Safari to open with my home page when I launched it. It now shows a blank page and I have to manually click the Home icon to get there.

But mine went right to TS (my home page) without incident or problem...

What's new in this version:
This update contains new features including:

Safari Reader: Click on the new Reader icon to view articles on the web in a single, clutter-free page.
Improved Performance: Safari 5 executes JavaScript up to 25% faster than Safari 4. Better page caching and DNS prefetching speed up browsing.
Bing Search Option: New Bing search option for Safari's Search Field, in addition to Google and Yahoo!.
Improved HTML5 support: Safari supports over a dozen new HTML5 features, including Geolocation, full screen for HTML5 video, closed captions for HTML5 video, new sectioning elements (article, aside, footer, header, hgroup, nav and section), HTML5 AJAX History, EventSource, WebSocket, HTML5 draggable attribute, HTML5 forms validation, and HTML5 Ruby.
Safari Developer Tools: A new Timeline Panel in the Web Inspector shows how Safari interacts with a website and identifies areas for optimization. New keyboard shortcuts make it faster to switch between panels.
Other improvements include:

Smarter Address Field: The Smart Address Field can now match text against the titles of webpages in History and Bookmarks, as well as any part of their URL.
Tabs Setting: Automatically open new webpages in tabs instead of in separate windows.
Hardware Acceleration for Windows: Use the power of the computer's graphics processor to smoothly display media and effects on PC as well as Mac.
Search History with Date: A new date indicator in Full History Search shows when webpages were viewed.
Top Sites/History Button: Switch easily between Top Sites and Full History Search with a new button that appears at the top of each view.
Private Browsing Icon: A "Private" icon appears in the Smart Address Field when Private Browsing is on. Click on the icon to turn off Private Browsing.
DNS Prefetching: Safari looks up the addresses of links on webpages and can load those pages faster.
Improved Page Caching: Safari can add additional types of webpages to the cache so they load quickly.
XSS Auditor: Safari can filter potentially malicious scripts used in cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks.
Improved JavaScript Support: Safari allows web applications that use JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) to run faster and more securely.

Safari 5 doesn't support streaming on "instant-watch" movies on Netflix, so it's Firefox for that ...

Well, whadya know! Mac system requirements are Leopard or Snow Leopard (so Tiger is out). However minimum Windows requirement is XP....  rolleyes.gif

However, there is a link on the Safari page for V4.1 for Tiger issued on June 6.

Looks like a lot of the leopard features are included.

That release slipped by me. I dl'd it, but haven't tried yet.

Exactly as it should. I'm not sure what Jon's link has to do with this behavior or why it should be changed. When I set a home page in any browser, that's where I want it to open. Period.

Haven't even had time to look at Apple's site about v. 5, just wondering if they're claiming fewer memory leaks...

Look at the link that I provided to FTM, Jim. The problem was caused by a Saft plugin. Even though Saft refused to load (due to the fact that a new version of Safari was involved), it was still causing some problems. When I removed the plugin, Safari opened with my home page, as I wanted. The preferences for tabs now include the ability to automatically open a link (from a web page) in a new tab rather than in a new window. That means that you no longer have to ⌘-click it. You can, of course, disable it if you like.

Hey! That "Reader" button/thing is pretty slick! thumbup.gif Read a fairly lengthy article and decided I wanted to print it out. Anticipating the usual font size/line break/pagination problems I was not looking forward to probably having to copy/paste/edit/style/print. Then, much to the surprise of many, I remembered the "Reader" thing! WOW! Wish I'd thought of before reading the whole thing on the web page... It's especially handy for those of with high dpi screens or miss-placed quad-focals (names shall remain secret!). While not all styling is maintained, I suspect that any basic html tags ( <b>, <i>, <strong>, etc. ) are recognized and respected. Such a simple idea that is simply handy! clap.gif
