Just the fonts!
« on: June 08, 2010, 06:36:19 AM »
QUOTE
Design is an amporphous subject, and an ambiguous
but highly useful profession.  The purpose of design is
to give clarity and form to the shapelessness of everyday
life--or at least to create some structures that help us
navigate within the everyday chaos.  Maybe that's why it's
so hard to pin down any particular definition of "design."

-- John D. Berry

On a daily basis I may notice fonts but I don't think much about them.  Century
Schoolbox is a classic, Comic Sans should be avoided, and Lucinda Calligraphy
is a current favorite.  I came across this essay about fonts by John D. Berry:

QUOTE
John Berry is an editor and typographer who works both sides of the design/content divide.
He is the former editor and publisher of U&lc  (Upper and lower case) and of U&lc Online.

The essay is probably worth the read and the price is right!

Fonts (collecting/using/studying/organizing/sorting/grouping/making/observing/etc.) are an expensive and extremely time consuming addiction that should be avoided! eek2.gif

But, ABD, the thing I have to say is so important it needs those special fonts to display properly!

Do you recall the OS 6 days (?) when there was some limitation on the number of fonts the OS directly supported?  They invented a "suitcase" to pack the fonts into and this allowed a lot more fonts.  Everything was okay until something happened and the suitcase disappeared and I was "speechless" in a way of speaking!  Well, I couldn't see anything that I typed anyway!

I too pay too much attention to fonts. The beauty of an uppercase G, for instance… I could never believe it when a client would comment that they all looked the same.

My recently deceased aunt wrote a poem and had a friend print up a bunch of them on postcard sized card stock. She planned to send them out last Christmas but waited too long (her most common 'action'). Now, with a memorial coming up, Judy asked me to read one of the cards and give her my opinions (no, she doesn't seem to learn very fast! eek2.gif ).

My first response was that it should be reprinted in a readable font! It's a nice, ornate, Gothic, very elaborate font. But it is not designed for casual reading, especially for more than a very few words! And the "G" was especially difficult to decipher! First I thought it was a "B" and then something else...I finally had to ask Judy what the word was supposed to be. rolleyes.gif Of course, it didn't help that it was only a 12point size! That font would look great on an entrance to a castle, engraved in stone with letters at least 12" high... oh well, my aunt apparently was given a choice of several dozen fonts and picked this one. That's one problem with looking at font samples that don't show exactly what is going to be printed with them.

Anybody use about a hundred post cards with only one side blank? rofl.gif
