Safari bug or Intego bug?
« on: July 12, 2010, 01:51:29 PM »
I was using Norton Anti-Virus for some time, with no problems.  Decided to try the suite of programs under Intego Internet Security. All Hell broke loose.  First, SuperDuper could not back up - it spent eight hours on repairing permissions until I stopped it.  I then repaired permissions through Disk Utility, and it took twelve hours. Safari started stalling and freezing.  Every time I clicked, I got a spinning ball.  It didn't matter whether I tried to click on a link, scroll, or anhy other action.  It would hang, and eventually load, but it was so bad, I started using Firefox, which had no problems.

Intego did not have the answer, except to agree that if Intego was the only change made, it had to be the culprit.  I did some research online, and found a posting which mentioned turning off the Real-Time Scanner in order to repair permissions. The minute I disabled it, repairing permissions went quickly, SuperDuper backed up in record time, and Safari went back to normal.

Although Intego has stated that all virus software interferes with repairing permissions, I have never had an issue under Norton. With this program installed, it means I have to deactivate the scanner every few nights when SuperDuper is scheduled, and when I want to repair permissions.  That wouldn't be the worst thing, if it were not for the fact that Safari bombs every time the scanner is on.

Has anyone had any experience with this??? Thanks in advance.

I didn't know that anyone had even suggested that Norton was now safe to use on any Mac?! Just Google "Norton and Mac" and I'll bet the "NEVER!" "DON'T" and much worse terms will out number the good reports by 1,000 to 1. eek2.gif

IMHO, "I was using Norton Anti-Virus for some time, with no problems." is the first such report I have heard in many years. Consider yourself fortunate. clap.gif If you really want a virus scanning product, you can't beat the free ClamX and it only needs to be run when you feel like it, certainly not daily...unless you just like to watch progress bars... dntknw.gif

You should document what you have and what you do as well; do this first if this computer is your only connection to the internet then not having details might be a make or break later!

While I will echo on everything that ABD says I want to say you need to repair permissions (at whatever level you are comfortable at) with neither of the antivirus products installed.  I don't know whether you have a network connection; I guess if you didn't then how are you writing things here?  If you don't this could be a problem as because even reasonably old Norton still checks the internet.  Next step: unplug the cat5/6 or whatever if you have them. I would uninstall both (assuming they are installed) and then repair permissions from a system DVD (the Disktools is on the menu bar).  Then, if you can, install the one you intend to use after plugging in the network cat5 or whatever (shouldn't have to disable the wireless but I know techs who would insist).  I use Applejack 1.52, the latest I think; and I'd run an automatic fix on all 5 areas.  I'm not sure how it works with 10.6 so check on that first.  If Diskwarrior is in hand then try running it; not sure how it works but it does have some bearing on permissions and preferences and could fix you up!

Applejack 1.6 is now available.

As to antivirus software, Norton caused no end of problems for me and I ditched it a long time ago. I used Intego VirusBarrier at one time but have not upgraded since Version 4 because it seems useless to me, as does all AV software. I found that IVB 4 interfered with Time Machine and goodness knows what else. From my experience, I would say that AV software is a virus.

Dakota, uninstall ALL anti-virus software - it's a waste of time, energy and money on a Mac at this point in time. If you want something to scan occasionally, as Jim has suggested, get the FREE Clam Xav. I haven't run any AV software in probably 12 years. I do have Clam Xav, but can't remember when I last ran that either. the only reason I have it is in case any of my PC-using friends/clients inadvertently send my an MS Office document that is infested with something. It won't affect my Mac, but I don't want to pass things on.

I'm probably not correct in all that I said in my previous entry here but I'll let it stand.  I'm having trouble of my own with Safari on this laptop (G4 Powerbook, 10.5) and I'm thinking about reinstalling Safari itself (well finding it and installing over the current version).  My problem isn't with Safari but with downloading in iTunes and a failure to download all of an album (I'm gaining on it but still have only 17 out of the possible 20).  I'm pretty sure I'm up-to-date on both and will probably paste this into a thread of it's own as the situation is more complicated than this thread (sorry for the distraction Dakota)!
