Ive not been able to see anything on my www.jcarter.net site since last night. Any idea of what is wrong, or how to find out?
www.machighway.com is my host
I emailed them, but they are not there on the weekends.
This is worrysome!

When I first tried to load the page about 30 minutes ago, it didn't work - but it works fine now. Perhaps the server was down?

Great news!  Its back up now, thank you for looking.
I just came indoors and found an email from Chris Graves, who is the tech guy there, and he said they had some emergency maintenance and it will be OK.
Whew!!!!
They lost a server last year, and I lost what I hadnt backed up.
I learned a lesson.

(When I have time, I want to back up EVERYTHING on both of my sites, and will ask the best way to do it. The pictures I wouldnt need, but the other stuff most likely.
I keep making pages and doing my classwork, and not linking the pages, so forget what Ive put up, so I need to make a complete copy every couple of months.
I try, but never remember to save it all.)

Jane, assuming you don't toss the HTML pages you're creating in the trash after you upload them, you should have everything on your hard drive. I don't know what you're using to create your pages (Dreamweaver? hand-coding?) but whatever it is, the complete file will have to exist somewhere on your own drive before you can upload it. The exception to this is when you are using a web-based site creation tool, but that is an entirely different kettle of fish and I don't think you've been doing that.

Hi Paddy,
I use mostly hand coding and a touch of DW.  (And a few others that I tried out a while ago.)
Jim told me to learn hand coding first and then go on to DW, I was doing it backwards. He sure is right, as once you learn hand coding, you can use anything.

All my new files are all here on this new computer, I try my best to put them in my folders properly named after they are uploaded(Transmit).  But I am so scatterbrained that I forget.
The reason I lost the other stuff last year, was that it was on the Mac that blew its motherboard. And when they lost their server, some of my stuff went away too.  

But, as you say, everything new must be all on this machine. Just in a sort of jumble.

The really old stuff that is residing on my jcarter.net site that was on the old computer, is what Im worried about. Its all up on the web, so can I open Transmit, and copy everything back onto this Mac?  Then put it on my external HD?

Yes - no problem.

And BTW - it's quite possible to learn to hand code while using DW - I've done it that way. I always use the split view - code on the top half of the screen and design view on the bottom. The one thing nice about Dreamweaver is that it organizes the site for you into a site folder and keeps everything in one place. You can also upload and sync files with it, though occasionally its built-in FTP is somewhat flakey. I use it most of the time because a lot of my clients do some of their own updating, so we use DW's check-in/check-out system so that we don't overwrite each other.

I highly recommend that you gather all your files for your site and keep them in one folder, with any appropriate subfolders. Follow the same structure online and that will make keeping track of things and updating and syncing things a whole lot easier! (Me? I'd define a Dreamweaver site, using all your existing pages and go from there - it will force you to keep it organized. You can can completely hand code in DW if you want.)

I think I shall take the DW class again, it was a bit confusing for me. But now I understand a lot more and it will make more sense to me.
I really loved the split screen, I need to buy a newer version probably, but Im eligible for an upgrade.
The built in FTP didn't work, but I always use Transmit, as its easy.

Could I download my entire jcarter.net site and have it exactly as its on the web?  Then when I add a page, I will just add a folder exactly like it onto my ext. HD.
There is so much to learn, and I am pretty much self taught, thats why I made such a mess of things at first.
 Then I discovered learning on the web, so many wonderful classes and tutorials out there, just need more time.

Jane - I would say you probably can recover a lot from your local drive as Paddy is saying.  I've found lots of things on local drives after I thought all was lost (graphics and such are important and I've yet to lose any entirely)!  Good luck with the Dreamweaver!

My old site is such a total mess, I made the first page with RapidWeaver, but the code is bloated, so thats as far as I got with that one.
Spent the day at the beach with our kids and grandkids and all the dogs. Our dog is totally wiped out, played ball in the water with the kids and swam for hours.
One tired Yellow Lab!  Belly full of food, all rinsed off with fresh water, and comatose in the living room. Just wait till my husband starts the grill,,,,,,,,
