I’m giving my MB-Pro to my grandson (as he gets ready for next year working in Spain), in return for a new (tah dum) iPad. Good deal, for a RETIRED-Road-Warrior who intends to be very content when at home, with his remaining iMac, wouldn’t you say?    toothgrin.gif

Anyone out there help me with any comparative data points in iPad models?

Does anyone have a 3G/WiFi model w/16 or 32 gigs?

If so, have you yet found practical limitations of/with either that might be instructive to a neophyt?. Have you yet approached “capacity” suggesting that you better might have moved up to the next plateau in your purchase?

My usage will be far more weighted toward photos and books than music. Any numbers you’d like to throw around re: your usage to date?

Any info could be instructive to this “babe-in-the-woods”.


PS: I know, I know, I observed – somewhat decisively – a few months ago that I was exceptionally happy and pleased with my Kindle. But, things change!   whistling.gif

Dick, I had the opportunity to play with a friend's iPad when I was visiting North Andover recently and he is absolutely delighted with it. He's actually a Windows guy too, though his wife uses a Mac. He has a lot of music and books on it and he's like a kid with a new toy. His is the Wi-fi only one, and the 16GB model (it was a gift) but he did say "get the 64 GB one, if you buy one!" I don't know if he's actually running out of room or not yet - but he's clearly anticipating doing so.

He says it's wonderful for email - he reads and responds to almost all of his email on it now, and he also reads the newspapers every morning with it. He demonstrated the (free!!) Dragon Dictate app and I was amazed by its accuracy.

Are you planning on getting the keyboard for it? I have yet to see anyone using an iPad with one, and haven't visited an Apple store lately to see the real keyboard in action.

I'm not sure 'photos' are any less space consuming than 'music.' OTOH, "Nobody will ever need more than 640mb of memory." laughhard.gif Of course, if you can manage all the photos before you load them onto the Pad, you could save some bytes by reducing them to 72dpi or whatever the native resolution for the machine is. Since it doesn't have camera, they'll probably pass through you iMac anyway and you can batch run them with Elements to reduce them to jpeg.

I know I have asked before, but with your younguns movein on, just remember I'm still available for apotion and it's accompanying accoutrements. hint, hint, wink, wink... rofl.gif

JW: I know I'll be getting the "best" onaccountabecause it's a Mac AND it's an iPad.   toothgrin.gif The question is "How large is reasonable/necessary for the olde guy to expect someone else to afford"?

Paddy:  I've had the same experience. Of all my Mac pals here-there-everywhere, only my audiologist has one and she reacts similarly to your friend. She never has had a lap top – though her offices/home are all-Mac – so she hasn't experienced/enjoyed the merits of a MacBook, thus some of her unbridled enthusiasm for her 64 gig may arise from that, but I hear (so to speak) from her the same reports as your friend. Not an appointment with her has transpired over the last 2 months or so absent another iPad "tutorial". I received my first  iPad/e-message from her (on vacation) a couple of day ago. Her iPhone is loaded with beaucoup pics and music. I have a sneaking suspicion that my son who is an outside sales rep will also be interested in seeing its functioning, even though his company gives him an armor-plated Winderz machine.

As I've thought about my current MacBook usage (now that I no longer travel), probably 90% of the interests for which I estimate an iPad would/could easily replace my MB-P are:
  • e-mail retrieval/dispatch
  • checking the "news" throughout the day
  • other web surfing (TeeEss. TiDBits, investment/business/political sites et al)

I don't yet know how easy manipulating downloaded photos may be to effect. I need to query the guys at the Apple Store about that.

I have the skinny wireless keyboard with my iMac/Intel 27. and I'm guessing it can easily be paired if and when I thought it useful to do so. I am going to be VERY interested to see if I can pair the bluetooth streamer accessory of my Oticon hearing aids with it. Now that would be remarkable. What that streamer has done for my iPhone has been little short of miraculous.

My e-book reading became really important (say 95% of my "book" reading) about 6 months ago when I got a Kindle. It has been truly w-o-n-d-e-r-f-u-l! The appearance of iPad's e-reader is quite compelling (to say the least), but not a central reason I'm interested in it. That could change, of course.  whistling.gif

I don't think I'd want to do that on the small iPad screen, even if there were an app to do that. nono.gif I assumed you'd do that well before loading them onto the Pad, since they would already be on your iMac, where Elements is installed. I seriously doubt that Adobe will create an iPad version of that program.

The conversion process is about as simple as it can get. But that's fodder for another thread, me thinks. Thinking.gif

My Mom's iPad is the basic WiFi 16 GB unit and I've loaded over 100 applications and maybe 30 books on it and used not much  space. Most apps are relatively small. The ones that are large are those that download a database of images like Art or Museum apps. Even then the largest app has been around 200 MB. If you are getting the 3G model you don't have to download as much since you can access the info anytime, anywhere.

I doubt you will do more than use the iPad to transfer photos or maybe keep a folder of images for your perusing. So I wouldn't imagine too much space needed for that unless you are typically forwarding very large files.

If you think you will be using this version for a long time then you may want the larger size. But keep in mind, a year from now, version 2 may have a camera and you may want to upgrade. So then you will be wondering who to pass this one on to.... wink.gif
