I though it was already dead.
And it comes almost on the 9th birthday of the iPod.

I remember standing on line at 48th Street Photo to buy the very first model -- and the only time I've been an early adopter. The size and weight of a thick paperback, and what a contrast to an iPod nano!

QUOTE
Turns out Sony manufactured it's last batch of Walkmans last spring. The final lot was shipped in April, according to Crunchgear's translation of an IT Media page. Once these are sold, Sony-manufactured Walkmans will be gone forever. But, it turns out, this won't be the final end of the Walkman, as Sony has licensed the name to some Chinese companies who'll keep selling knock-off units in Asia and the Middle East.
Sony will keep manufacturing portable media players based on CDs and MiniDiscs, which should have a few more years left in them yet if the Sony pattern holds true.

NPR said they would still be offering the Walkmen in the US; at least I think that's what they said!

Note the "Out of Stock" on the portable player.

There are some things sometimes that you can do better with old technology: not that I can think of any with the Walkman necessarily. My sister and her husband are involved in a lot of musical projects and use a Sony Disc recorder of some type. . .I believe that it has small magnetic recording discs and with the right microphones it does a very good job of recording live music. I suppose a Walkman might be better if you aim was playing old tapes or something; but perhaps they aren't selling that type anymore. No, I just checked the link that Krissel put up and these all seem to be CD type or digital. I think someone like COBY or something does alright with that technology but I'm sure that an iPOD would be better!
I would like have a CD player that plays the MP3 CD's but that's really a personal problem!
I suppose this is what my sister was using but I thought the discs were free standing like CD's but metallic:

In cleaning out tons of stuff at my folks' house we recently came across a cassette Walkman, new in it's box. Now have to remember where I put it....

Many say that a pristine box is often more important and valuable than what came in it! $$$$
