Seems Apple is still looking for ways to make a little money (30%) off of anyone who develops anything for the Mac, iPad...iPhone...iPod....... They seem to be out-doing Microsoft in trying to be the most controlling corporation?

This is part and parcel to the Apple "1984" mindset isn't it!   Devilish2.gif  If you "own" the OS and the hardware then the only thing  that  you don't control is the that pesky app software and if you control the sales and the circumstances of development then everything "should" all work together!  It's like the "peaceable kingdom" of software!


Note the worried look on the Lion's face when it considers the sale of "non-app" store software!  Thinking.gif

Unless Apple does something to make it impossible to run a non-App Store app, I don't see developers flocking to the idea. There are already too many other ways of downloading software without them having to pay Apple 30%! I can't believe that Steve doesn't realize that selling hardware means having software that runs on it. He was around when the Apple ][ was made, right?! rolleyes.gif If this is just an way of killing the Mac, it sounds like a great tactic. I think there must have been an overdose of arrogance in that new liver... dntknw.gif

The OS X app store will be optional. People who don't want to use it can still develop, or buy, apps the same way they do now. It won't be a replacement for the current way to buy apps; it will be in addition to.

Major, complex apps like Adobe Creative Suite or Microsoft Office will still be sold just the way they are now. Developers will still be free to sell apps off their own Web sites or on CD or DVD or whatever. The App Store does not control what you can do with your Mac; unlike with an iPad or iPhone, you will still be free to get apps in other ways if you want.

This is a way for smaller coders to get their application noticed.  How many times have we mentioned a program here that no one heard about?  If I were a newcomer to the app business I'd be willing to give up 30% for the exposure an Apple store would bring.

As tacit mentioned, it won't be mandatory.  Apple can control the apps on the IOS units because, unless you jailbreak it, you can't really get to the guts of the system. The Mac has the terminal with UNIX so installing "uncertified" apps can be done.

Getting noticed is the only valid reason I've heard for such a place. And, IMHO, that is relegated to a very small group. Plus, they already have such a place on their site. dntknw.gif I still say, "There's something rotten where there's fire..." or something like that...uhmph...
