.DOCX opens in TextEdit
« on: January 11, 2011, 09:40:56 PM »
I know I should probably know the answer to this, but I don't and I can't think of a better place to ask the question than TS.

I get more and more documents with the .docx extension and they always open in TextEdit.  mad.gif What do I need to do to make them open in Word???Thinking.gif

I Think that if you highlight the file in the finder, then under file go to "Get info".  Should be an option that says "open with" select Word and check the box that says to open all similar files.

There's a downloadable M$ patch for Word that allows it to open .docx files. However, I've found that the freeware NeoOffice open .docx files without a patch.

It's not necessary in Word 2008 or 2011. If you are using an earlier version, it is Open XML Converter. And, it's not a patch but a separate app that converts .docx files to .doc files.

Jon,
I downloaded Open XML Converter and it worked on some of the .docx documents, but not all. Not sure why, but it opened the ones I was most wanting anyhow.

Tks for the link.
