Wet and wild on the Oregon coast

We had friends visit over the long weekend, and had a blast catching up and showing them our area and visiting the aquarium and other places. Of course we did all this during one of the worst rain storms to hit our area: 5.5-6+ inches of rain. Lots of roads flooded, mud slides, roads slipping away, houses buried to their roofs in sand! over in Bayshore (my town - just across the little bay from us) ... and we were out having fun. LOL! When our friends left there was only 1 road open to get inland to I-5!!!! The others either were closed due to mud slides or flooding, or you couldn't get to the main roads because our local roads to them were closed. What fun it was! LOL!  We did get drenched, but had fun and were fortunate to not have any accidents (and we weren't aware of how bad the storm actually was when we were out and about!)

Our friends rented a house down there for their visit, but fortunately were on the east side of the spit! I'm soooooooo glad we didn’t buy a house in Bayshore -- renting there for 7 months was enough!

Good to know you "guys" are OK, had heard there were mudslides in Oregon and assumed they weren't in the eastern part of the state! rolleyes.gif I guess that volcanic soil is not too terribly stable, even the parts with trees! Just stay away from those steep valleys and 'friendly' streams! eek2.gif

There is at least one (and maybe more) mudslide over in eastern Oregon. Earlier today we had light winds and drizzle. Since 1pm (it's now just after 4pm my time), we've had .44 inches of rain (and it's still pouring) and the wind has picked up. One friend has lost their home as the ground gave way underneath. sad.gif We're still standing and doing okay.

Glad to hear that you two are ok, that's the good part. Unbelievable that your friends lost their home like that.

They may be able to save the home. Yippee! Since they are in a park, they will move it to another lot - one that actually has soil on it. biggrin.gif  We had sunshine today and that was wonderful. Shoveling the sand is a never ending project when you live in Bayshore. The home owners association owns 2 small bobcat units and they use them all year long. Our friends said trying to sleep was like sleeping in a car wash. HAHAHA!

As to shoveling snow vs sand, isn't it all relative? I feel for those of you who are digging out from snow storms. I did that for a lot of years and it's no picnic either.

A pal sent me some pictures, and I don't think this one was in that article. It's my favorite photo - partly because when we lived down there this particular house was always fantastically creepy since the owners were only there for Christmas and 2 wks. in the summer and it was always sand-bound -- but not like this:

Strange...were those dunes not visible when builders offer to build on those "lots?!" Around here, there are several minor rivers and creeks, all of which have flood plain designated areas. Anyone trying to build in those areas is advised that there will be no support for flooding damage or problems. If they choose to build there anyway, they cannot expect even normal utility or emergency service during a flood. Nor will most banks even make a loan to build anything. doh.gif

Then there are those who buy a house next door to an airport and complain about the noise... rolleyes.gif I guess there is one born every minute... laughhard.gif

Neil, just imagine if they tried to move the 'cats cradle' underground ... err .. undersand? Cat's boat? ROFL!

ABD, yup the dunes were there. Big controversy when it was all started. If they tried to start it now, it would probably be denied. I say probably because you never know. wink.gif biggrin.gif

When we lived in Oxfordshire, we were not too far from the Upper Heyford USAF base - but far enough not to be bothered by the planes. A village nearer the end of the runway (F-111s taking off with afterburners anyone...? biggrin.gif ) were far more aware of them. Commuters who had moved into the village complained (as you said) regularly, although the jets rarely flew weekends or at night. People who had always lived there didn't mind them at all. Their view: "The base provides jobs for people who might not find work anywhere else locally".

From my quickly fading memory, I recall instrument landing charts for many English airports depicting 'villages' in the area. They were usually shown so one could avoid over flight during visual weather and help lower the noise levels. But commercial aircraft are orders of magnitude quieter than military, especially on takeoff. Last commercial aircraft with afterburners was the Concorde... wink.gif Still, the 0-dark-thirty departures at FedEx and UPS hubs make sleeping a little difficult for those who refused the buyouts usually offered many years ago... rolleyes.gif
