Screen Capture Icon

iMac Intel i3 21.5” OS 10.6.6

Is there a way to change the default label of a Screen shot icon?
With OS 10.6 the default labelling is “Screen shot 2011-01-18 at 11.18.32 AM”.
I would like to change that default labelling to what it used to be with OS 10.4, that is
simply Picture 1, Picture 2, ....Picture n. Maybe with the Terminal?

Assuming the main text string is in the OS files somewhere, a grep search should find it. dntknw.gif Here's a <quick course (Find Anything with Grep)> on using grep, but there are hundreds of similar sites out there. Depending on how it is stored, however, may make it extremely easy or terribly devastating to the OS.

Of course, there are also numerous image capture apps that do a lot more than the simple captures that the OS does, and they all let you establish the base text to start with. And most let you do the naming manually, also.

Here you go, JB.

Read through the comments too - there are a couple that are worth paying attention to.

I actually prefer the new naming convention. Sure, the file names are loooong, but they tell me more, and they're usually binned pretty quickly anyway, as they're often just for answering or asking questions 'round TS. wink.gif

Just to keep everybody posted. I followed Paddy’s link and installed the suggested Automator folder action. Sure enough, I now have the long Screen shots labels changed to the simpler Picture 1, 2,... Funny thing though. When I first do a capture, the original long Screen shot label appears, and after 4 seconds the icon with its long label dissapears and a new icon with the shorter Picture n appears. Of course I can edit the Automator to show whatever label I would want.

Just to keep everybody REposted. I removed the Automator Folder Action because:

- After having changed 2 Screen Shot labels to Picture 1,2, the Folder Action would not change any further Screen Shot labels, i.e. the labels would keep their Screen Shot names.
- Worst, not only did it change only the first 2 Screen Shot labels to Picture 1,2, it changed the first 2 of ALL the labels to Picture 1,2.

I guess this Automator Action is not compatible with OS 10.6.6.

Does SL have the app Grab. When using Grab to take a screen, window or selection shot you get the image with the name Untitled. When you save it you can change the name to anything you want.
Cheers, Tom

Of course! wink.gif But I think the "need" by the OP was to have the automatic naming action. Of course, the new naming action actually includes some useful info rather than the previous "1," "2," "3," etc. What we really need is a computer that not only saves the EXIF data but automatically adds key words that wold include objects in the image; Eiffel Tower, golden retriever, exotic flower, ugly duckling, etc. rofl.gif GPS locations are nice but those are usually pretty much the same for screen captures. doh.gif
