Sound system for G5
« on: June 25, 2003, 09:42:32 AM »
The new G5 has digital and analog audio output. But it doesn't have an Apple Pro Speaker port, right?

Hence, I cannot use my Pro Speakers anymore.

I am using my PM as HiFi therefore, I'd need a good speaker system connected to my G5.

I was wondering, is it possible to connect the G5 to a HiFi? I know, most PC sound cards can do that, but never tried it with a Mac. And if so, what kind of cable would I be needing?

I wouldn't want to buy computer-only speakers (although the Pro Speakers are great).

Ideas, suggestions? smile.gif

Do you know for sure it doesn't have that anymore? smile.gif

How are you using your Hi Fi now?

Spartacus,

You can use the analog 3.5 mm stereo audio out port jack to connect the G5 to your HiFi using one of these.

If you really want to use your Apple Pro speakers you could use the PowerWave, a bit of an expensive option

Actually, I have a very old HiFi (like 15 years old...), but was thinking about buying a Sony Receiver soon (Sony STR-DE 445 or STR-DE 485).

I'd like to connect my DVD Player and my PowerMac to it. That's basically all.

I'm afraid I don't know too much (read bearly anything at all) about HiFi and audio stuff.

Also FWIW. smile.gif

"A revolution in sound on the Mac. The G5 features S/PDIF – digital            sound in/out with support for surround. A 5.1 speaker system from Logitech is mentioned as a Build-to-Order option."

Sparticus, I believe that the STR-DE485 is no longer in production but you can see your options here on the sony receivers page.
I run a system similar to what you intend to, a STR-D650Z Sony with 5 dish CD, 2 slot cassette, Dual VHS, and a DvD player. All Sony components, except the speakers (7) which are a mix and match from years of systems that have come and gone.
I don’t have a DVD recorder yet, haven’t had a reason to acquire one, but I suspect it will be in my next upgrade.

Sony makes good equipment but their proprietary when it comes to peripherals, you either have a total Sony system, or the frequencies get boggled, in some cases.

Their remote system don’t work on any other TV components, for example, but it gets worse if you mix and match peripherals in my experience. Mind you I have a 6 year old receiver and the the rest has been upgraded as needed, like a new SLV-D300p combo VHS-DVD. My point is, if you plan on building a complicated system it may require you to buy only Sony components to get the most out of your equipment.

Since I’m already committed to Sony I’ve learned to live with their ways, and now considering a new receiver, my only option would be Sony, if you see what I mean.

Your mileage may vary. wink.gif

Yeah, i have two digital ins on my home cinema, i would be able to connect the G5 straight to that one and enjoy the cinematic sound enhancer.
My next wish on audio support is SACD now blush-anim-cl.gif

Spart, about a year and a half ago I replaced my 20 year old Technics receiver with an Outlaw Audio 1050 6.1 receiver.  I came upon this Internet-only audio company while perusing receiver reviews online; I had never heard of Outlaw Audio before, but I figure that the 1050 is a $1000+ receiver selling for $499.

I have been very happy with the unit, and it sounds great in plain ol' stereo mode, something to consider since some multi-channel receivers apparently aren't so great in that department.  Outlaw has even recently announced an "old fashion" stereo receiver, a unique offering these days.

I also have a Sony TV and DVD player and everything works just fine together...

I don't know if the Outlaw receiver will work for you due to your location, etc. but it can't hurt to look http://www.outlawaudio.com/home.html
