Lion download
« on: August 13, 2011, 02:40:09 PM »
here is my setup:
os x 10.6.8
cpu 2.8ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
memory 2gb

already have Lacie 1tb external drive used as backup using superduper.
have now installed 2nd Lacie 1tb external drive and installed clean Snow Leopard and then purchased Lion (from Apps Store) proceeded to DL direct to Snow Leopard and after 2 hours checked to find that it would take another 7 hours. Stopped DL.
Is it possible to have a disk sent instead of DL?
Suggestions please.
George

You will be able to buy a thumb drive with Lion later this month. See this for more information.

    1. Are your downlod speeds being throttled by your ISP?
    2. Did you try downloading again?
    3. Did you check "Force Quit" to see if the browser was stalled?
    4. Where was the download being saved; one of the externals or the internal drive?
    5. Have you tried using an app like Speed Download which opens multiple connections to the download site? And can resume downloads from where it left off.
    6. You might also try very early in the morning (your time) to avoid the majority of users making the dl in the Colonies...and try during the times when Wall Street is closed!!!
I feel obliged to tell you, however, that Apple is using this rather inconvenient dl method with the intention of getting people to simply buy a new Mac just to avoid the wasted time... dntknw.gif

1. Bt (isp) tell me that the 3mbps that I get at the moment cannot be improved upon, being approx. 2 miles from the exchange.
2. Did try reloading but although Apple acknowledge payment the system is asking me to repeat the payment process which I am reluctant to do.
3. checked and browser was not stalled.
4. DL was intended to be saved to newly installed external drive (did not see any other options).
5. Same as 2 in that I was looking for pathway to resume and as yet have not seen it.
6. I do not fall out of bed early just to bang away at keyboard, I have other priorities, shopping, chores etc.,
Hope to get in touch with Mujibar (in Mumbai) in the next couple of days will let you know.

1. Ah, the joys of DSL...when close to the switch... rolleyes.gif
2. There may be a minimum download of bytes before the payment kicks in. Hopefully, it is a total download before you are ever charged.
3. Great.
4. I don't understand why you could not download to any drive with enough space. Does the download only allow saving to a drive capable of having Lion installed on it? That's not logical, to me. dntknw.gif
5. I don't think the OS is set up to resume downloading at any point, I have only seen that in FTP apps and something like Speed Download.
6. Bring you Mac over hear and I'll let you use my Internet connection. Unfortunately, we don't have any available bedrooms...but there is lots of room in the backyard for a tent! laughhard.gif

Do you have a laptop? Perhaps you could buy a couple of hours time at a local Internet café? It's a hard realization that His Steveness did not intend for Lion to be used outside large, urban, broadband-enabled areas of the Northern Hemisphere... rolleyes.gif

George, I think Apple stores will let you download Lion there - so I'd suggest that you give them a call and ask (Eldon Square?) if you could bring in your iMac and do the download there because your download speeds are too low. I know it's a pain, but paying $69 for a 4GB flash drive with the install on it when you can easily make your own for the cost of the download and about £5 on the flash drive, which you may already own anyway, is silly. I suspect they won't let you download the installer to one of their machines and make your USB drive installer that way - I think you'll probably need to take your iMac in. Do you know anyone with a laptop with SL installed nearby who'd let you borrow it for this exercise?

Make sure you make the installable copy BEFORE you do the install on the iMac!!! (after installation, the download gets deleted, so you cannot do the install first) Instructions here: http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2011/07/how-t...or-flash-drive/

Basically, all you want to do at the store is get the download - everything else can be done at home.

I did it and made my own thumb drive installer. smile.gif

As for the reluctance to input your payment info again - either check your credit card statement online or check your App store account to see if Apple has charged you for the download already. You should be able to download again if the charge went through - if it didn't, then Apple is treating it as a completely new download.

Paddy, I had spoken to local store who did not have an answer to my problem. They did put me through to Applecare and they suggested that I lug my 27in Intel down to the store and have them 'do the business'
whereupon I suggested (like you) that I take an 8g b memory stick to the Apple Store and they DL Lion onto it, the Applecare whizzman said "why did I not think of that".
This has now been arranged and I will be in the Apple Store on Friday morning and hopefully all will be resolved.

WOW.gif Can I send you a thumb drive and ask you to put the installer on it?! I'm sure the shipping and purchase price (plus a small service charge by the 'employee/TS member') wold still be less than what Apple wants for the same deal! rolleyes.gif laughhard.gif

So glad they're being sensible about it, George!! smile.gif I was worried that they'd refuse to do that, since it more or less competes with Apple's sale of Lion on thumb drives. (Maybe it's a situation of "don't ask/don't tell" - if the Apple Store doesn't ask corporate if it's ok, nobody can tell them "no"!!) wink.gif

Called into local Apple Store the intention being that they would install Lion on my memory stick, (I went one better and brought along new 1tb external drive with clean install of SL) but no they were not prepared to do that however they were prepared to SELL me (would you believe) one of their preloaded Lion memory sticks AND get this at a  heavily discounted price.
Now there's generosity for you. Counted up to ten then gave them both barrels whereupon the Genius? disappeared to consult Senior Genius and on his return handed me one Apple (Lion) memory stick and said "with the compliments of Apple".
Have now installed said Lion and don't know what all the fuss was about, so far nothing startling.

Somehow, I doubt that this scenario has not occurred before... rolleyes.gif Thanks for 'standing your ground!'

Since Apple chose to forego the normal (and very inexpensive) DVD format (we all know that the VHS/CD/DVD/BlueRay/mechanical drive fad is almost over) they are the ones who should pay for whatever media they force "customers" to use (Hey, Apple, you do remember what 'customers' are, right?!). rant.gif

Jim, Apple would probably retort "customers may have opinions", therefore are not always right.
