.DS_Store file
« on: September 14, 2011, 06:47:56 PM »
It's been doing this since day one. I left it until other more "serious" problems were fixed. Now the time has come to fix it.

The file looks like this:
[attachment=2319:DS_Store.jpg]

When I open the file I get the following window:
[attachment=2320:DS_Store_opening.jpg]

If I open File/Get Info I get the following:
[attachment=2321:DS_Store_Info.jpg]

I don't have a clue as to what this file is and why it always reappears on the Desktop upon Startup.

Without Shutting Down, if I trash it, it comes back on the Desktop after 4 seconds. I tried to Secure Empty Trash but it always comes back.

Is this the one that's going to stump XABD?!!!

It's just one of many files normally hidden because that's the way Apple wants it. I suspect your Finder prefs are set to "Display Hidden files." You may also have it set to display the normally hidden file name suffixes; .app, .pages, .jepg, .tiff, etc. I'll check when I get back home.

BTW, this is nothing new in Lion, the .DS_Store file has been around practically since OS X. Specifically, it stores the locations of all objects, thier names and thier icons in every folder on your drive/volume (your Desktop being just a representation of what's in your Desktop folder, of course). You can delete them Romulus hearts vintner but the OS will simply recreate them when you close/change anything in that folder. You might be able to read the characters in Terminal or BBEdit but I doubt the 'plot' would be too captivating. laughhard.gif

How to fix:

I don't know why so many people seem to be having them show up though - normally they are hidden by default.

I may have changed my settings by using PathFinder rather in Finder prefs. At any rate, you may have just not been seeing the file because of having ~3.892 kajillion files "stored" on her Desktop. rolleyes.gif It comes down to a single bit somewhere in the OS settings, I suspect. But it something that is easy to see when it happens. Just use Tinkertool, OnyX or get Pathfinder (it's a very good addition to the Finder and many use it instead of Finder!)

XABD I knew we could not stump you. Guess what. I hid the file with one of the Lion Tweaks you talked about.
The tweak is in the second column and is called "Show hidden files" Yes  No. I checked the No box and poof the DS_Store file was gone.

WOW! I now have the start of a stable Lion, for now anyway...until I start to screw it up, says he with a smile in the corner of his mouth.

Thanks everybody.
