what's the point of a G3 chip if Apple is moving to G5?

I'm sure there are size, cost and temp. considerations but what's wrong with a G4 and it's V-engine, wasn't that a better design?

If I remember correctly I read sometime back that G3 (the chip) was favored by some except for it's limitations. Now that the limitation are vaporizing, would the G3 be a more favorable choice?

IBM demoed their first 1.1 GHz G3 processor back in February 1998.


I am pretty sure we'll see the G3 in the iBooks at least as long the PowerBook still has the G4. Besides, the PPC 750gx and 750vx chip are really fast chips.
And IBM never liked the Altivec-Engine. They always thought that G4 wasn't the better design.

It's a different CPU philosophy.

IBM makes the G3 Chip for lots of other uses.

They will continue to develop it if Apple uses it or not.

One may end up in your next Toaster.

Now the G5 is out, can't they make like a "ready to install" motherboard with a bigger G3 processor and videocard for the classic iMac's?
Would love that, cause at the end... i will be needing to sell this little bugger but i still love it.

I just checked what I wrote above and found out that the 750vx chip DOES have an Altivec Engine.

The new gx chip is only a faster version of the fx chip which is inside the current iBooks.

Just like kelly said, IBM is exclusively producing CPUs for Apple. But the CPUs with Altivec are only for Apple, as far as I know.
