bil207, is correct Marcel.

I installed a 512 chip as an Xmas present in my sister's iMacDV400 and the two slots were accessible by just removing a piece of plastic as you see in the last picture. I recently had the whole thing apart to replace the PRAM battery and saw no other RAM slots besides those two.

Yep. That clears the confusion.
I was thinking the older [one bottom and one top] iMacs.
Even had an iMac/400 where both dimms are easily excusable.

I have a tray cd-loading iMac and I've never been successful getting it to recognize (or operate with any stability) anything over 256 MB. But that's another thread... upset.gif

It will only recognize a total of 256 mb, regardless of the configuration: 1 256 module or 2 X 128 MB. With a 256 and a 128, it will only recognize 256 mb in OS 9, and won't start up in OS X. I've tried several reputable vendors (OWC, Small Dog, DMS) and 3 different 128 modules.  I thought this would change when I got my hARMONI upgrade from Sonnet, but I guess it's not processor related.

I remember that thread...  Chuckwagon, I am sorry to here that you haven't found ram that will work, but just to show  Marcel that more than 256 MB is possible I will post a screenshot of my 333 imac with 288 MB.  One 32 MB stock chip + a 256 MB low profile SO DIMM

That must be really irritating.

I feel bad to say that the drive installation was succesfull, i'm back on a 40Gb now.
You people were correct all the way, there wasn't a hidden bay in there, hehehe.

I know it's best to have a lot of memory for OS X. My iBooks have 384 and 640 MB and run great in OS X. The 333 (now 600) iMac is now primarily for the kids' games and as a print server. I was hoping for faster scanning and gaming with the processor upgrade, and so far I haven't been dissapointed. MyTV runs a bit smoother now as well. I wish I could upgrade the video chip past 6MB, but after the memory problems, I'm happy as is. I can live with 1024X768 @ thousands.

With a 256 and a 128, it will only recognize 256 mb in OS 9, and won't start up in OS X.

There are two kinds of 256MB SODIMM--a "low denisty" DIMM (it may have chips on both sides) and a "high density" DIMM (it has fewer chips).

A tray loading iMac can use 256 MB DIMMs, but only the low-density kind. If you put a high-density DIMM in there, it will only be "seen" as a 128MB DIMM.

Most of the time, when you order a DIMM from a RAM vendor, you don't specify low-density or high-density--you get whatever the vendor has in stock. And for most computers, it makes no difference. It's just a question of what kind of RAM chips the vendor happens to have in that batch, that's all. But in your iMac, you must use low-density DIMMs.

Who needs millions when working on website that can handle only WebRGB colors biggrin.gif
I thought that all iMacs were upgradable to 8Mb VRAM... but don't take my word for it.
I'm glad to hear that, even whith your memory problems (ahem.. i mean the puter tongue.gif) the mac is still having it's own tasks and does them well.

Tacit, can you pleaaaaaase guide me into the Order of your Knowledge... gosh, the things you know B)
