How come THIS didn't happen the first time?
« on: July 03, 2003, 07:17:49 PM »
Just downloaded Mozilla 1.4

Was just "told" I couldn't drag 1.4 to OSX Apps Folder because I "don't have sufficient privileges".

Oh shoot! What IT doesn't know is I've got privileges I haven't even used yet!

So what's the problem? This didn't happen the first time I installed 1.3.

Why now?

How do I tell them back there in Champaign-Urbana that I am too "privileged" . . . soo privileged . . . I own a Mac!

Seriously, I'm sure it's something simple, but I don't know/can't remember what to do.

Harv and I just had a conversation that led to my looking at GetInfo and Permissions for Mozilla (old) and Mozilla (new) and System (Folder).

More mysteries and no solution. What should probably be changed from Read to Read and Write in GetInfor/Permissions is grayed out. Hmmm?

Anyone know what an error 30 is, that won't allow the new Mozilla to replace the old Mozilla?

The only thing I can suggest is to run Disk Utilities/Repair Permissions to see if that fixes the problem. It worked for me in a similar situation.

Dick, When we spoke yesterday we discussed changing the permissions of Mozilla.

I wonder (that means guess [WAG is really the better term]) if it is the Permissions in your Applications folder which need fixing, e.g. somehow it is precluding the Mozilla application from being added.

Checked that/those also, Harv. No apparent problems there. Also re-repaired permissions, Bruce.

I decided not to fight it anymore . . . especially after receiving additional "error" numbers, e.g. 1000, from further attempts simply to open the "old" Mozilla, soooo I stashed it in an Archive Folder, on another partition, and downloaded 1.4.

It then, naturally, installed smoothly and completely.

Attempting to pick-up bookmarks, addresses and mail, however, from the 1.3 archived folder was not successful. So I went to my parallel copy of NS 7.0.2 which seems to maintain everything up-to-date (how do they do that?) and so it appears all is safe and secure for and in the new Mozilla. .

"How", I'm not sure; "why" is even more mysterious.

If it's true that the "new" NS has the old Mozilla's Junk Mail controls, I'm going to go get it also. Might as well keep up with progress.

FWIW, when trying to figgerout "Permissions" I, quite naturally, consulted David Pogue's Mising Manual for OS X (2d Ed) only to find this wonderfully characteristic Pogueism . . .

RHP,
The same thing happened to me a few months ago with Disk Utility.  I tried every combination of permissions and ownership to no avail.  huh.gif  It works at its present location, so, in the end
