Inaccurate WhoIs Domain Info
« on: July 03, 2003, 01:05:46 PM »
Recently I began receiving junk faxes from a company "alerting" me that someone has tried to register .biz and .net domain names using a domain name I have registered.  The company makes money by offering registration services, at inflated prices, natch...

Anyhoo, sending unsolicited junk faxes is illegal under most circumstances (apparently most people do not know this fact... for more info go here http://www.consumerwatchdog.org/other/fs/fs001543.php3 ) and it is possible to collect up to $1500 per junk fax through legal action.

I have filed a complaint with the FCC, but a registered letter to the contact listed on WhoIs was returned with the notation that it could not be delivered as addressed and that no forwarding address is available.  The company's website has no contact info other than a toll-free number and an e-mail address.

My understanding is that the domain name registration info must be accurate and up-to-date or the domain name can be revoked or some other action taken.  Is this correct, and if it is, to whom do I tender a complaint?  Any ideas on how I can track down the company?

The company in question is iSupport Net and their website can be found at http://www.isupportnet.com/

Call the toll free # from a pay phone and get all the "INFO" you can, as a willing consumer.

Mayo, the company iSupport.net is not listed on ICANN's list of accredited registrars, so they are a reseller of some sort.

However, isupportnet's registrar is TUCOWS - I try would complaining to them. They at least should have an accurate address for the company if they can't help you in other ways. TUCOWS is listed on the ICANN list of accredited registrars.

And you're not kidding that they're a bunch of highway robbers - they make it sound like *everyone* charges the same exhorbitant rates!!! mad.gif

Did it always cost $70 to register a domain name?

Until mid-1995 it was free to register a domain name. Although many domains were already taken, there were still a slew of valuable domains available back then. After 1995 the cost was $100 per 2-year registration period, and eventually the price dropped to the current $70 per 2-year period.

I pay $8.95/year with GoDaddy - and they ARE on the ICANN list, unlike these bozos.
