This would be good for our family, as we have tons of old slides and photos, and do I ever get around to scanning them?  No, I keep saying that its next winter's project, but somehow I just dont/cant get started on this overwhelming project. Boxes and boxes,,,,

So maybe this will be the incentive to just quickly sort them, toss them into their shipping box and send them off. Then see them on the web, download the ones I want to use PS on.

Sounded like a GREAT idea, that is until I got to this part  "each photo smaller than 8×10 inches costs 45 cents"   In my case 5 or 6 shoe boxes probably equate to 2000-3000 individual photos.  That would come to something like $1000-$1500 buckos.

Cheap at half the price?????  Yea RITE. Maybe Ill put some more effort into it this winter.

It will take a lot of sorting for me, but Im hoping the kids and my brother will pitch in, as some of the photos are theirs. Can split up some of the cost.
Im hoping that they might come down in price in the future. The guy who did my videos reduced his price a lot once the software and equipment became more affordable.
Though we cant count on that.

Despite the cost, Im going to start sorting soon. The pictures/prints, I can scan, but the slides are not that easy, though I do have a slide scanner.

Does Walt mention other services? There are many all over the world. Seems to be a 'low-cost-labor' type of job and most of these companies are overseas. The biggest problem is having faith in the shipping company (both ways) and the foreign company and their abilities.

Pre-sorting/previewing is the biggest job (unless you are independently wealth). Projection is best but an ordinary light board and a hand-held magnifier is inexpensive and maybe faster! You can even make your own light board with a couple of square feet of white, translucent plexiglass!

And, if you already have a slide scanner, that service sound excessively expensive! Take 50-100 slides a week and get to work! There's no rush, right? Besides, Winter is approaching and this sounds like a good family type project as well as a fun trip down memory lane! wink.gif

If you just want to spend some money, get a 2TB external drive! laugh.gif thumbup.gif

Ive started already, but keep getting bogged down. But maybe I should make it a priority and set out one box per week like you say.
It sure is the presorting and viewing that takes so much time, there is the OH LOOK AT THIS ONE factor, which is the real time consumer.

Maybe you can get some of those neighborhood kids to do that sorting! They probably won't be as distracted by the "OH-LOOK-AT-THIS-ONE" problem! laughhard.gif "Free cane poles! Inquire inside!" You might even sell them line and hooks! Even worms! wacko.gif

I've used GoPhoto to scan several hundred 35mm slides. Pleased with the results and you only pay for the scans you want. They send you a disc.

Cheers, Tom
