Sounds like exactly the same problem already known; Java is a vector for malware. Period. That's not a Mac problem, it's a problem for any computer that uses Java. But putting "Apple" in the headline guarantees more click throughs. smile.gif

The story as told by Techradar (from the MacFormat stable). Ran Software Update (MBP, SL) this morning and - surprise, surprise! - a Java update appeared.

At the risk of sounding like a Fanboy...
When a person installs something that the computer maker has specifically and intentionally excluded, how does that make the computer maker responsible for the damage done? Especially when the computer maker actually disables the plugin, automatically after a certain amount of time. As long as the end user has the option to install stuff they shouldn't or have been warned about ad nauseam, these hacks are not only possible but should be expected. wallbash.gif

If you don't want to be attacked via Java, remove it from your computer, whatever brand it is. dntknw.gif

Updates available for Snow Leopard: <Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 13> Note: "On systems that have not already installed Java for Mac OS X 10.6 update 9 or later, this update will configure web browsers to not automatically run Java applets." (Emphasis added)

For Snow Leopard, Lion and Mountain Lion: <Java for OS X 2013-001> Note: "On systems that have not already installed Java for OS X 2012-006, this update disables the Java SE 6 applet plug-in." (Emphasis added)

While these updates help improve Java security, Apple still disables the browser plugins. Gee, I wonder why they'd do that. wallbash.gif

Bottom line: Don't use Java unless you know you have a specific and important need. Otherwise, blame the person you see in the mirror, not Apple, for any problems you encounter. And, as far as I'm concerned, the same advice applies to Flash. YMMV, of course. And I do use Chrome, which sandboxes Flash.

If only everyone did things like I do... flail.gif cheer2.gif scram.gif
