I posted this in another thread a few days ago:

My wife always used MarinerWrite to open/edit/save .doc and .docx stuff. But I noticed last week that they were opening in Pages. I think that occurred when I upgraded her MBP to Mountain Lion (which she barely noticed).
The problem is that Pages/Apple assumes you want to convert the .doc to .pages. That means one has to remember to use "Save as...". EVERY SINGLE TIME THE DOCUMENT IS ReSAVED!!! (I know, but she has been able to finally create the habit of Saving often... ) This thread reminds me to change the default app to open .doc files back to MW! Judy doesn't understand why Pages works that way, and I can't give her a logical reason, anyway.
She has used Google Docs for a shared spreadsheet (that, of course, should have been a database ), but she still grasping that document doesn't live on her hard drive.
I just read a note in another forum that suggested an answer to this specific frustration: Use the Keyboard Shortcuts editor Apple so kindly built into our System Prefs.
Goto your Keyboard Pref Panel:
Select the "Applications" item in the left column. Click the "+" button under the right column
Find the app you want to add a Shortcut to.
NOTE: In this case, the app doesn't show up, since Pages is installed inside a folder.
In this case, simply select the "Other..." item and you will get a standard Navigation Dialog
to use to find the app.
Type the exact text seen in the Menu for the item you want to use. Then
press the keys you want to use as the Shortcut. At that point, the "Add" button will
be enabled and you should click it to install the Shortcut. If there is a conflict, you
will get a warning and can select another set of keys. You could even find out where
that Shortcut is used and decide to delete it!
My problem is I don't remember to take advantage of this capability that's been around for many versions of OS X! Maybe I can create a Shortcut...
