Jon, I'd pretty much forgot about that setting and I think it's
ON by default in both Lion and ML. I noticed I
do allow "Install system data files and security updates in the "Automatically check for updates" section. That seems confusing to me and possible dangerous! It may be Apple's attempt to assure that most of us get security updates?
At any rate, I do have the "Download newly available updates in the background "
unchecked, even though it
claims would not actually install anything. The text says it will "notify [me] when...ready to be installed." I'm just paranoid, I guess.
There is also a setting (unchecked, in my case) that applies to anything purchased "other Macs." That is even more confusing! I suppose those "other Macs" are unable to connect to the Mac App Store?
Maybe on a business LAN with many Macs (not to be confused with mini Macs
)
Additionally, when
Notifications became available (ML only, I think), you can get one stating that an Update is
available. Don't be too quick to click the two buttons on that dialog! One basically says (because I'm writing this with my ever failing memory!) "Thanks, let me take a look at what you're talking about." In that case, The Mac App Store will open. But the other one says, "
I'm feeling lucky! Go ahead and install it without even telling me what it is!"
This is one
Notification that is going to do something, be sure you see what those two choices are. It is different than the vast majority of Notifications that allow you to simply dismiss it.
