Outlook Express Question
« on: February 22, 2003, 06:29:00 PM »
I have a friend who recently upgraded to System X 1.2.4. Internet Explorer was included with the upgrade and works fine. However, when he wants to use his email application it defaults to the Apple email program, which he doesn't want to use. If he tries to open Outlook Express it immediately goes to System 9.2.2

How can he use Outlook Express in System X 1.2.4, preferably as the default application?

Your friend might be running on OE 5.0.2 - - -  and up until a few weeks ago it worked fine with me also - - - but thenI experienced all kinds of problems.  After two days on and off talking with with my ISP, I ended up upgrading to OE 5.0.6 at: www.microsoft.com/mac/download/#OE and select the BIN English version download.  It's about 11mb so pop-open a beer.

My ISP mentioned that OE 5.0.2v was encountering all kinds of unexpected 'quits and failures' to logging w/ OS 9.xx and above.

Worked for me. They also have new upgrade for /#IE although I have not gone there yet because of my preference files and lists.

After you install 5.0.6 folder you will have to drag the 5.0.2 to trash because it will not write over the existing software for the upgrade - in other words they don't have an "uninstall" feature (but save your address list and folders first).

There isn't a ver. of Outlook Express that will run natively in OS X. The only way to continue using OE is to run it in "Classic".

bil207, You are probably right. The Microsoft Outlook Express web site says:

Microsoft Outlook® Express 5 Macintosh Edition is our free, award-winning e-mail program that makes it easy to send and receive e-mail messages, manage contact information, and participate in newsgroups. Built for Mac OS 8.1 to 9.x, Outlook Express 5 is designed to do the job simply, elegantly, and intuitively.
Running or moving to Mac OS X? You need Microsoft® Entourage™ X, built specifically for Mac OS X. Entourage X seamlessly combines e-mail, calendar, address book, and tasks into one powerful program. Now offered in a box of its own, Entourage X sells for only $99.

I don't think he will spring for Entourage.

If anyone is running Outlook Express with System X I'd like to hear about it

Thanks.

Well, yeah Bob. You can use it in X, it just runs under Classic.

Is this what you mean by going to 9?

That's the only way to do it.

Also. FWIW. Under Internet Preferences you can select Default E-Mail Reader.

Don't know what changes that will make though.
