Image Testing Thread

THIS IS A TEST! It is only a test! If it were not a test, I would not say it is!

I noticed that someone had posted link to an image on their DropBox space. When I clicked on the image/link I got a new page with the image on it. It was, I think, intended to be a link to download the image from DropBox. That could be done with a control (right) click, of course. I am wondering if this is a function of my browser (Chrome), DropBox or some settings in my System. Therefore, I have uploaded 3 versions (gif, tif, jpg [PSD is not allowed at PB]) of the same image to both DropBox and PhotoBucket and designated each as a link to them. I will see how they are handled by Chrome and maybe Firefox and Safari. You are welcome to see how your System/browser handles the links as well, if you want. Otherwise, please move along... nothing to see here! BTW, I'll probably delete this entire post after my tests are complete and my paper is published.

The url for PB is: "http://i1327.photobucket.com/..."
For DropBox, it is:"https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/"
Both those use the "." before the actual site domain name. Not sure that's the 'problem' and the images are displayed in the Preview, anyway (except for the tif from PB).

I'll go back and look at kimmer's DropBox code...

Ah HA! kimmer did not link to the displayed image. She has the mages on her own site. The links are just text links to the DropBox images. So they will probably require a control/right-click to actually download.

BTW, the whole point of storing images on DB or PB or your own space is to save space on the TS servers. As you are hopefully aware, images consume huge amounts of bits as compared to text. TS is totally free but that means we operate with the least expensive but reliable hosting we can get. That means our server space is limited. So, if you don't have access to <PhotoBucket> or Dropbox or some other free image hosting space, you can still upload images directly to TS. (Google/Bing/YuckHoo is your friend!)

Just make them as small as suitable (that also prevents the infamous horizontal scrolling problem caused by wide images!). And please consider registering at PB/DB/Flickr/etc. Obviously, you should be using different passwords/usernames and/or throw-away email addresses, also.

Yup, the images are stored at our site so that I don't take up TS space or extra bandwidth.

Hmmmm ... when I click the link to your full version stored at dropbox, Chrome autodownloads the photo. When I click the link to my full version stored at dropbox, Chrome opens the image. The only diff I can see is that you used a tif and I have a jpg. I'm going to try a tif of one of my pics and see what happens.

Edit: okay, removed the jpg and put up the tif. It's a lot larger kb wise, but now Chrome autodownloads the image. I'll modify the other one as well.

Being on the Left Coast, you prolly don't get grammar/spelin updates as fast as the more civilized parts of the country. You may want to sign up for a service at "YouAin'tHeerdNothinYet.edu" for automatic and timely updates. If youd been conectd to that service, youd hav nown that "mage" (which someone may have edited?!) is the new word for "image." With so many words coming into our language with the letter "i" tacked onto the front, the Spelin Police have decided to remove it unless absolutly requird. You may have seen the efforts to do the same with the leter "e" and many other nstances of double consonants?

Chromes nsistance on displaying a jpeg/jpg may be related to that being a default format on the intermess? All I know is that I will probably use your method; full-sized images to DropBox, accessed with a text link, and displayed at TS images stored at a different location. PhotoBucket obviously wants to keep file sizes as low as possible by converting TIFs (which can have multiple layers) into JPEGs. I think that loss of detail/data makes it unsuitable for sharing many original formats. A paid account may remove that limitation, I don't need to spend money (or read the TOS/EULA) to find out.
