Emulate a Mac G5 on an Intel Mac?
« on: August 21, 2013, 12:42:38 PM »
Hi,

I suppose such emulation is unlikely but I remember that it was possible to emulate the Atari on a Mac.

I have a bunch of useful apps on my G5 and I am reluctant at my advanced age to buy their equivalents for my Mac Mini.

I think that this was what Rosetta was for but it stopped working in 10.6.  If you have 10.6 see if Rosetta is an option; I might be wrong and it was 10.5.

There are I think a also a couple of emulators but they're still in Beta.  One is Pearpc:

http://pearpc.sourceforge.net/about.html

The other is Sheepsaver but it seems only to be up for OS 9 software:

Rosetta is indeed an option in 10.6. If you don't have it installed, you can do it by inserting the 10.6 DVD, mounting it, and selecting Optional Installs. Alternatively, if you launch a PPC-only app, the OS will ask if you want to download and install Rosetta directly from Apple. You need to do this only once; it will work for all PPC apps thereafter.

If you're in 10.7 or later and need Rosetta, you're out of luck.

Thanks friends.

I seem to be among those who are rather late in discovering stuff that has been around a long time.

Since having retired I am no longer in the loop, no longer in daily contact with a bunch of knowledgeable colleagues.
