Where do you keep your Applications in OSX?

Where do you keep your Applications in OSX?

I'm refering to applications other than what is installed in the Applications folder in OSX.

The reason I ask is that today I had to call Tech support for one of my sons games, Medal of Honor-Spearhead.
The problem was that he couldn't save any of his games. The Autosave wasn't working nor were the manual saves.

His other games worked fine. I had all of them located in the Applications folder in OSX.

The Tech from Aspyr advised me to move the 2 games to the root level of my hard drive and create a games folder there, then make sure the permissions were read and write, and then repair permissions. I also ran DiskWarrior 3.

Now he can save his games.

Anyways, I was wondering what some of you thought of this statement:

The tech told me that OSX doesn't like to write to the Applications Folder. unsure.gif

Anyways, I was wondering what some of you thought of this statement.

I have most of my Applications like Photoshop and Painter and so forth in the Applications folder in OSX so that my son and I can both use them(he uses photoshop too). I have other Apps like Appleworks and other Apps in there too.

I was wondering if I should move them to another location or not.

What do you think?

Hmm. That's a new one on me Gary. Somehow I don't think it's so smile.gif

I put all my OS X capable Applications there.

I've also installed Games in the Applications (Mac OS 9) Folder.

One installed itself in the Root Directory and I left it there.

I bet if you'd checked/repaired permissions where it was  it would work too. smile.gif

I got many apps scattered across 4 drives (both internal and external) and amongst several partitions without problems --but then I'm the Admin.

The permissions in OS X are structured as Owner -Group -Other, so the tech may have a point if you (or more likely your son) does not belong to the right group in order to write to the Applications folder (owner = System,  group = Admin).

My "rule of thumbs" is this:

1. Anything installed by OS X in the Apps folder stays there.

2. Anything else can go anywhere I want it to go.

3. Anything non Apple that insists on being placed in the Apps folder, I scrutinize.

I am actually using my OS X just like I used to use OS 9.
I greated a games folder outside of the applications folder. And within the applications folder I have lots of sub-categories (text editing, graphics, etc.).

Always worked fine for me.
One rather uncomfortable thing was, though, that Apple's software update via system preferences was unable to update and replace apps that were not located in the applications folder (without the sub-folders). Therefore, I had to trash the older version by hand.
But I noticed that it seems that OS X 10.2.6 is able to detect where the software is on the HD.

Thanks for the info.

I haven't taken any of the Apple applications out of the applictions folder and that's how I leave it.

Now that i have that games folder at the root level, i'll leave it there. I'm thinking of possibly making a graphics folder at the root level at sometime and put my graphics programs in there etc. Right now they seem to be functioning well.

Anything Apple related stays in the Applications folder so it will be updated properly, the rest of the third party stuff resides on a seperate partition designated just for that purpose.

I know what you mean, Gary, some installers like to put things in there instead of asking first.  What you can do is make a copy of that app in the location of your choice and test drive it from the new location for a while.  If it runs fine, then delete the one in the apps folder.

This isn't quite what you're asking, Gary, but what the heck, why not pose it, since Kelly, Spartacus and kps are all gathered 'round the fire chatting.

I, too, started out having a separate partition for Apps, as I have on my G3 w/8.6 (including a separate pristine copy of the OS), but concluded without much information (read =none) that logic suggests it would be better to let any given installer "decide" what to do. . . i.e. where to stash things.

In a related matter, what I think has worked best is to file documents in a variety of folders on a separate Docs partition. It has the added (small) inconvenience that moving something from the DT to that partition requires a separate trashing of the "original", but the ease of later finding something/anything created a long time ago makes up for any extra "work".

Does that make any sense to the gurus?  rolleyes.gif

Does OS X have aliases?

I'm still working 9.1 and for all my 'creative applications, I let the installers put them wherever they want.
To keep the desktop clear, I have an "  Applications" folder in the Apple Menu where I keep the appropriate aliases. I keep a double-space before the folder title so that it's always at the top.

I also keep an alias of the Apple Menu folder in the Apple Menu with a • prefix. That way it's always at the bottom. This is really handy as it gives really quick access for adding and deleting without rummaging into the System folder.

My advice is simplicity itself.  Keep ALL applications in your Applications ƒolder.  On the rare occasion when an application misbehaves due to that being its location -- move it.  In all likelihood this issue will NEVER again come up.  I have never seen it; although I have certain application sthat will NOT function if stored  elsewhere.

As Gary S already stated Yes. A little add on is most of the 'dock' (maybe all.Not sure about that part) are aliases as well.

Gary S.
Correct my confusion here.?.
Didn't you mention in another thread that you keep all your apps in a applications "partition" OR was that for OS 9xx?
