OS 10.2 on a G3
« on: July 13, 2003, 12:04:09 AM »
Is anyone running 10.2 on a 233 G3 ? I've got a G3 233 with 640 mb, and I am wondering if 10.2 will run at a reasonable speed.

Dick,
Unfortunately I think it would be really slow. I have a beige G3 with a 500Mhz processor upgrade. i don't run it on it though.
Bernie or someone else may know and report shortly.

You may want to upgrade the 233. Processor upgrades are fairly inexpensive for Beige machines .

I am running 10.2.6 on a 333mhz imac with 288MB ram.  It is slower than on My 800mhz G4 with 512 MB, but it is certainly useable.  It would probably be slower on the 233, but how much is a good question.  If it were me, I would try it and see.

IAWSteve, try it, install it on a seperate partition so that if you don't like the performance you can just reboot into OS 9.

Got two beige G3's running at 400 Mhz and 576 MB memory in one and over 300 MB in the other (forget exactly how much is in it), both are run Jaguar (10.2.6 and 10.2.4 on the other).  They run fine with ATI 128 Rage Orion video cards.

But, as a comparison, when I boot into OS 9, functions, windows opening and generally all activity is a whole lot snappier.

If you can get a G3 350 MHz or better zif processor card (ebay), beige G3's can overclock it easily 50 MHz more without any heat issues.  Or OWC has faster ZIF cards starting at $190 for 450 MHz, clock it to 500 MHz.

Hello, Dick Miller

Take a look at this thread from a couple of month ago . . .Re: The Molar

Its subject is an all-in-one G3 that was produced for educators, from whom I received it as a gift for one of my grandsons.

With the addition of a new 80 gig HD and 500+ megs of ram, its 4 partitions (3 for OSes 10.2.6, 9.2.2 and 8.6) have him ready for everything. . .at age 4, that is!

Don't know how fast is "fast" in your eye, but it seemed to me to be working like a top. But then, neither one of us will probably ever use PhotoShop v "61.2" on it biggrin.gif

Jaguar surely would be worth a try on your beige, I should think.

I didn't see/hear anything "breaking" when I finished with the latest updating of 10.2.6. His parents report that it (and he) are just sailing right along.

Hope this is useful to you.

GO Bucks!
